Where to stay in the Whitsundays

Planning your holidays in Queensland and wondering where to stay in the Whitsundays? You’ve come to the right place!

The Whitsundays are a group of islands located on the east coast of Australia.

The nearest town on the mainland is Airlie Beach. That’s where you will find most places to stay in the Whitsundays.

If you’d rather stay on one of the islands, you can opt for Hamilton Island, Daydream Island or Hayman Island.

In this article, we will go through each area and tell you exactly where to stay in the Whitsundays.

Where to stay in Airlie Beach

Located between Mackay and Townsville, Airlie Beach is known as the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef.

This cute coastal town is the perfect place to stay in the Whitsundays if you’d rather be on the mainland or are on a budget.

You will also find resorts in Airlie Beach so if you want a luxury holiday in the Whitsundays, don’t worry, Airlie is good for that too.

That having been said, I particularly recommend it to backpackers and families on a budget as it offers cheaper alternatives than the islands.

If you choose to stay in Airlie Beach, you obviously won’t be on an island however, you can enjoy them just as much.

From Airlie Beach, you will find many tours going to the Whitsundays. Cruises, scenic flights, skydiving, snorkelling, kayaking… everything you can think of!

Visiting the Whitsundays is expensive so if you manage to save a bit of money on accommodation in Airlie Beach, you can spend more on tours!

Airlie Beach is also great for shopping, eating and the nightlife!

Airlie Bay is the best area but you can also consider Cannonvale Beach and Proserpine.

Here are some great places to stay in Airlie Beach.

Where to stay on Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is the largest inhabited island in the archipelago and when it comes to amazing places to stay in the Whitsundays, it sets the bar!

You can easily reach Hamilton Island by plane or boat. There are direct flights from all major Australian cities and ferries are going from Airlie Beach several times a day.

Hamilton Island is a very popular holiday destination. It’s famous for its amazing resorts, making it the perfect destination for families and honeymooners.

If you want to enjoy a luxury holiday in the Whitsundays, opting for one of the fabulous resorts will be the best thing to do!

Here are the best resorts on Hamilton Island.

Beach Club Resort

Located on the resort side, near Catseye Beach, the Beach Club is famous for its amazing restaurant and amenities.

This is an adult-only resort which is why it’s so popular for honeymoons. If you are looking for family-friendly places to stay on Hamilton Island, you will find them a bit below.

What do we love about it?

– It’s close to the beach
– Friendly staff
– Amazing facilities (pool, rooms…)
– Delicious food and drinks at the restaurant

What don’t we like about it?

– I mean, to be honest with you, it’s impossible to find something wrong with any of the resorts on Hamilton Island and certainly not the Beach Club. For the sake of finding something, I’d say that this experience comes with a cost and if you are on a budget, that won’t be suitable for you.

Palm Bungalows

This resort offers a bit of a different experience as you won’t be booking a room but a whole bungalow. Located between the marina and Catseye beach, it’s the perfect place for families who want to enjoy their own space.

What do we love about it?

– The Bungalows are gorgeous and so cute!

Where to stay on Daydream Island

Daydream Island is way smaller than Hamilton Island, therefore less frequented as well.

If you love off-the-beaten-path destinations and quieter places, it will be your paradise.

There is a ferry that goes to Daydream island from Airlie Beach and Hamilton and several day tours coming every day. This means that you will still see some tourists but definitely nowhere as much as in Airlie or the other islands.

There is also plenty to do on Daydream island so you won’t get bored.

You will only find 1 hotel on the island: Daydream Island resort.

It’s a great place to stay in the Whitsundays. There are all the facilities you may expect from a resort on a tropical island: pools, games… Loads of water activities are offered so whether you want a dynamic or relaxing holiday, you can have it!

All of that having been said, it will be a bit more expensive than Hamilton Island.

Where to stay on Hayman Island

Hayman Island is another smaller inhabited island in the Whitsundays. It’s privately own and boasts one of the most famous resorts in the area: InterContinental Hayman Island Resort.

It is the most luxurious resort in the Whitsundays! The facilities and service are purely amazing! It’s quite a magical place! They have many pools, restaurant and even beachfront pool villas!

If you are looking for a more secluded island where you can enjoy a relaxing retreat, Long island would be a better place for you.

Please note that this island is not as accessible as the others. You will need a taxi boat to get there.

That being said, it’s a great place to enjoy some time away from the crowds.

Elysian Retreat

Elysian Retreat is an amazing resort on Long Island. It features an amazing pool with island views.

The services are amazing! There is a restaurant that serves delicious food and massage services.

Camping in the Whitsundays

If you wish to go camping in the Whitsundays, that’s also possible. There are several campgrounds in the national park. They are located on Whitsunday Island, Hook Island and Henning Island.

whitehaven beach in the whitsundays

As you can go to any of the islands with a vehicle, it’s only for tents. Facilities are limited. There are only showers and tables. However, it’s a great way to be close to nature.

You can find the list on the official website here.

I hope this article helped you in deciding where to stay in the Whitsundays. As you can see, there are many options and for all purses! No matter what, you will have fun! The Whitsunday islands are amazing!
