1) Whitsundays Ocean Rafting Tour

⏰ Duration: 6.5 hours to 8 hours
⭐Reviews: 4. 8 / 5 – 700+ Reviews. See all reviews here.
If you are looking for a Whitehaven Beach day tour, look no further! Ocean Rafting is one of the most popular Whitehaven Beach tours from Airlie Beach, and for good reasons! It’s absolutely brilliant.
This semi-rigid inflatable boat will take you all the way from Airlie to Whitehaven in no time. It’s one of the fastest vessels available in the area which means that you will get to spend more time on the beach!
The tour starts at Port of Airlie. You can meet there directly or choose to use their hotel pick-up service.
From there, you will head straight to the Whitsundays.
There are two main activities during this tour: visiting Whitehaven Beach (and Hill Inlet) and snorkelling.
To make sure you’re getting the most out of your day, Ocean Rafting offers two options.
The first one is Northern Whitehaven which is ideal for people who want to spend more time snorkelling since it includes two snorkelling spots.
The second one is Southern Whitehaven which is better if you’d rather spend more time on the beach as you will get a full 2 hours there.
No matter what option you choose, you will get to do both anyway. You just won’t spend the same amount of time.
The tour also includes a guided walk to Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach. The local guide will take you to the best viewpoint in the Whitsundays and will tell you loads of stories about the area. It’s very interesting.

⭐Reviews: 4. 5 / 5 – 90+ Reviews – See all reviews here.
If you’re looking for a unique experience in the Whitsundays and want to make the best of your time in the area, this is the tour for you!
It is, in my opinion, THE BEST Whitehaven tour from Airlie Beach.
While Whitehaven Beach is by far the most famous natural landmark in the area, it’s not the only thing there is to see in the Whitsundays.
The national park offers a huge number of activities and sights and opting for a multi-day cruise in the Whitsundays is an experience you’re not going to forget.
It will allow you to see more, to do more but also to experience the boating life onboard of a sumptuous sailing boat.
A lot of vessels in the Whitsundays don’t look great. Some are quite big as well. This is not the case with the Summertime.
The boat is very pretty and will look amazing in your photos!
You will start your tour at the Port of Airlie and head straight to Whitsunday Island where you start a guided tour to Hill Inlet and then down to Whitehaven Beach.
In the evening, you will be able to watch the sunset over the islands (it’s gorgeous).
On the second day, you will discover some amazing snorkelling spots and will also go on a sea kayaking tour during which you usually get to see turtles and sting rays.
Also, there is a hot tub on the boat!! How cool is that?

3) Thunder Cat Whitehaven Full-Day Eco-Cruise with Lunch

⏰ Duration: 8 hours
⭐Reviews: 4. 8 / 5 – 600+ Reviews. See all reviews here.
This is the perfect Whitehaven tour for eco-friendly travellers. Thunder Cat is another popular tour in the Whitsundays and it is particularly unique because the catamaran used was custom-made.
As a matter of fact, it doesn’t really look like a catamaran but one thing is for sure, you’ll have fun!
It is a bit less flexible than Ocean Rafting since you don’t get to choose your favourite option but it does include more things, especially food.
All in all, Thunder Cat and Ocean Rafting are the two best Whitehaven day tours from Airlie Beach so whichever one you chose, you won’t be disappointed.
Here is how your day is going to be.
You will be picked up from your hotel by a bus and brought to the Port of Airlie where you will board your vessel.
From there, you’ll head first to the snorkelling spot where you can discover the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef (obviously snorkels are included).
After eating a homemade snack, you’ll head to Hook Island and another snorkelling spot.
Hook Island is known to be the best island in the Whitsundays for snorkelling so be prepared to be mind blown.
After that, you’ll get lunch and finally head to the stunning Whitehaven Beach.
You will go on a bushwalk with the local guide who will tell you everything you need to know about the local ecosystem and history of the Whitsundays.
After taking some beautiful photos from Hill Inlet, you’ll finally head to the beach where you can go for a swim!

⭐ Reviews: 4. 7 / 5 – 450+ Reviews. See all reviews here.
The Camira Sailing Adventure is ideal for people who don’t want to go snorkelling but would rather have drinks included as well as a nice meal.
The thing with cruises in the Whitsundays is that most of them don’t include alcohol, some allow BYOB but that’s about it.
Camira on the other hand provides it and it’s included!
Here is what your day will be like. You will start in the morning at Port of Airlie and head straight to Whitsunday Island (that’s the island where Whitehaven beach is).
On your way there, you’ll be served a morning tea.

6) Whitehaven Beach BBQ & Hill Inlet Adventure

⏰ Duration: 8 hours
⭐ Reviews: 4. 7 / 5. See all reviews here.
This Whitehaven Xpress tour is the perfect tour for people who want to get a proper Aussie experience.
It’s also overall the Whitehaven day tour with the best value for money since you get pretty much all the advantages of the other ones.
Firstly, they offer a hotel pick up so you don’t have to make your way to the port by yourself, you simply need to let them know where you are staying.
The boat is very nice and even has a rooftop which allows you to relax while you look at the beautiful surroundings.
You will get to spend 5 hours on Whitehaven Beach which is much more than most tours as well as going snorkelling!
Of course, you will also go on the bushwalk to Hill Inlet where you can take beautiful photos.
But the true highlight of this tour is the Aussie BBQ. The crew will take with them everything they need to prepare a traditional and authentic barbie, right here, on Whitehaven Beach!
You will also get some snacks in the morning and afternoon and will be provided with a wet suit in summer so you can swim safely.
Drinks are not included in the tour however, they are available at the bar on the boat at an extra cost.

Looking for an overnight cruise in the Whitsundays? This OzSail Whitsunday cruise will be perfect for you!
The Whitsundays are one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s well worth spending more than a day there if you can and an overnight cruise is a perfect way to do it.
Unlike the one previously mentioned, this tour is ideal for people who love nature and would also like to experience camping in the Whitsundays and not just sleep on the boat.
So, are you ready to know more? Here is what to expect.

The first time will be spent on the boat. You’ll get to admire the sunset and experience sleeping on a sailboat.

8) Helicopter Tour: Flight + Whitehaven Landing

⏰ Duration: 2 hours
⭐ Reviews: 4. 9 / 5 – 50+ Reviews. See all reviews here.
If you want to splurge a bit and opt for a unique Whitehaven Beach tour from Airlie Beach, then the helicopter tour will be ideal for you!
This is one of the only 2 tours in the Whitsundays where you actually get to land on Whitehaven Beach! It’s an amazing way to discover views of the islands and Whitehaven beach from a different angle.
PRO TIP: Another way you can do this is by booking a scenic flight. It’s provided by the same company, GSL aviation, however, you don’t get to land on the beach and will have to book another tour for that.
You start your tour with a 30-minute flight from Airlie Beach, over the Whitsunday islands. The pilot will act as your guide and point out all the interesting sights.
You can simply relax and just look at the places the pilot points out.
It’s such a beautiful flight and your eyes will tend to go all over the place (that’s what happens when there are too many beautiful places to look out) so having the pilot commenting and pointing out the important things is very handy.
You will then land on Whitehaven Beach (now that’s an entrance, isn’t it?) and get to spend over an hour there.
You can walk on the beach, have a swim… whatever you want!
What are the reviews like?
❤️ “Our pilot West was very experienced and professional and gave us a comfortable ride. He had great knowledge of the area and take off and landing was exceptional. The landing on Whitehaven Beach is a must. The food platter is also a must as you relax on the beach with some snacks.” – See all reviews here.
What is included?
- Helicopter tour
- Commentary by the pilot
9) Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach Seaplane Tour

⏰ Duration: 4 hours 30 minutes
⭐ Reviews: 5 / 5. See all reviews here.
If you liked the idea of landing on Whitehaven Beach but thought the helicopter tour was too short, this one will be perfect for you.
It is provided by Air Whitsunday Seaplanes.
It will take you over the Great Barrier Reef so you can appreciate the different shades of blue from up above as well as the beautiful colours of the coral and the stunning heart reef.
You will get to have a stunning view of Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach before landing on its crystal clear waters.
Once there, you will spend 2 hours exploring the beach and taking pictures before heading back.
Another plus of choosing this tour is that you will get to land in the Hardy Lagoon.
Not only is landing on Whitehaven Beach a fantastic experience but this specific location is also very quiet and private which means you get to enjoy the beach pretty much for yourself.
You will be provided with snorkelling gear and stand up paddles so if you fancy exploring a bit on a SUP, go ahead!
It’s also important to note that you will get lunch on the beach.
What are the reviews like?
❤️ “What a trip, the only way to see the reef in all its splendour is from above! Absolutely great team professional, informative & down to earth, our pilot took care great of us the whole trip. Thanks for one of the greatest experiences of my life!” – See all reviews here.

10) SeaLink Whitehaven Beach & Islands Boat Tour

⏰ Duration: 1 day
⭐ Reviews: 4. 8 / 5 – 100+ Reviews. See all reviews here.
Are you looking for a day tour with a boat with AC? That’s possible!
SeaLink is a name that you might have heard before if you’ve been travelling around Australia since they provide most of the ferry crossings around the country, like to go to Kangaroo Island for example.
In this case, this tour is operated by SeaLink Queensland.
The vessel here is a bit bigger than in the other tours mentioned however, it has more ‘comfort’ features such as AC and a rooftop.
Another thing that stands out here is the staff.
They are incredibly knowledgeable and will be sharing that wealth of knowledge during the walk to Hill Inlet but also onboard.
If you love learning more about the local culture and are a bit of a history buff, you will be in for a treat.
The tour departs from Shute Harbour and goes through the Molle group of islands before heading to Hook Passage and stopping at Tongue Point where you will go on the walk to Hill Inlet.
You will then sail to Whitehaven Bay where you can finally get to enjoy the beach.
What are the reviews like?
❤️ “A fabulous day tour to Whitehaven beach. The crew were happy and helpful with a lovely lunch and snacks throughout the day.” – See all reviews here.

11. Whitsundays Scenic Flight

⏰ Duration: 1 hour
⭐ Reviews: 4.9 / 5 . See all reviews here.
When it comes to visiting Whitehaven, most people think of boat tours from Airlie Beach and this is for sure, an excellent idea.
However, after spending time in the area and trying quite a lot of activity, I know that there is another type of tour that is worth your time and it’s a scenic flight.
Whitehaven Beach is absolutely gorgeous and the higher you are, the better.
Since the sand and water swirls around, it creates a very unique landscape and the best way to see it is from the sky.
Of course, if you opt for one of the boat tours, you will go to hill inlet which will give you a good idea of what Whitehaven Beach really looks like.
But if you want the true experience, you need to go higher up and if a helicopter tour is not in your budget, this scenic flight might be.
It starts from Airlie Beach airport. You can easily get there by car but they also offer pickup from your accommodation so you don’t have to worry about a thing.
Once you’re there, you will board the plane and start your 60-minute flight.
The things I loved the most about this tour is that it was a small place so we all had our own window.
This is a huge advantage because everything is so beautiful, you really want to have the possibility of looking as much as you can.
It also makes it easier to take photos.
I also loved the fact that the pilot acts as a tour guide. They talk in the mic and you can hear them through your headset. They tell you exactly what is what and where to look.
One of the first stop is Whitehaven Beach so you don’t have to wait long to see it. When we did it, we arrived through the island which means we flew above the entire estuary and beach. It was absolutely amazing!
But the great thing about the tour is that you also get to see other famous landmarks in the area such as the Heart Reef (which you can only see from the sky really) and Hamilton Island.
What are the reviews like?
❤️ “The pilot was a down to earth dude who instantly made you feel comfortable. His knowledge of the area in unmatched and I learnt so much about the area. We had 6 on our plane + pilot and we all had a window seat. The scenery was simply amazing. What a beautiful place on earth to witness. If you get the chance, book the flight.” – See all reviews here.
What is included?
- 1-hour scenic flight
- Guaranteed window seat
- Pilot commentary
- Pick up and drop off

The Lady Enid is a beautiful sailing boat. You will love spending time on it and it will look amazing on your photos.
Once the boat leave, you will be served breakfast which includes tea, coffee, scones, clotted cream and strawberries (this is definitely a high standard compared to the other boats).
You will then stop at Tongue Bay where you can start the walk to Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach.
After spending some time exploring and relaxing on the beach, you’ll make it back to the boat, right on time for lunch.
You will then head to a snorkelling spot. You can spend up to 40 minutes snorkelling which will give you plenty of time to see all the beautiful coral and sea creatures.

13. Tallship Whitehaven Beach Sail Snorkel

This tour is ideal for people who want to have a relaxed day on a beautiful vessel. Here you will be on a classic 62-ft gaff-rigged schooner so needless to say that you will want to take a lot of photos!
The crew is very friendly and they will also let you participate in all the boat ‘duties’. For example, if you’d like to help pull up the sails, that’s entirely possible!
You will meet your skipper at the office at 7AM (but if you want a free pickup from your accommodation, you can let the provider know and they will arrange it for you).
You will then board the boat and sail across the Whitsunday Passage towards Tongue Bay.

Really enjoyed being on a sailing boat for the first time, even got to pull some sails, felt like an explorer! Great snorkeling spot with lovely fish and nice coral and the cherry on top, 3rd time lucky visit to Whitsunday Island (after the first times being rainy and chocolate milk colour) I finally got to see the clear blue water, the long-promised turquoise waters, swirling sands and heavenly white beach. Totally worth it! The crew was nice, friendly and funny.” – See all reviews here.

Tips to enjoy your tour to Whitehaven Beach from Airlie Beach
Before you start your tour to Whitehaven Beach from Airlie Beach, it’s essential you know a few things about the trip and how to make the best of it.
Nobody likes making bad decision because they are not informed enough so make sure to read this section since you will find a bunch of tips to help you.
Dress Appropriately
When you go on your trip to Whitehaven Beach, it’s important to be prepared for the weather.
The temperatures in Airlie Beach can get quite hot during the summer months so make sure to wear light, breathable clothing and sunscreen.
In winter, it can get quite chilly, especially with the wind on the boat so you might want to consider taking a jumper or windbreaker.
Wear a hat
It’s very sunny in the Whitsundays and especially on Whitehaven Beach because there aren’t that many places with shade so it’s very important to take a hat.
Of course, you won’t want to wear it on the boat since it would fly off but once you get to the island, you’ll be happy you’ve taken it.
Take sunscreen
Once get, the sun shines bright in this area of the world so make sure to take enough sunscreen and to apply it regularly.
Also, if you can, please consider buying eco-friendly sunscreen since you will want to go in the water and we all want to protect the oceans.
Take a change of clothes
Between the walk and the time you spend on the boat, it’s possible you will get a bit wet so I recommend taking a change of clothes so if you do get wet, you can be comfortable in new clothes.
Be on time
Make sure to be at the meeting point on time as you don’t want to miss the boat. Remember, these are all group tours and the crew has to do what is best for the group so if you are late, they will leave without you.
Also, as a general thing, it’s the respectful thing to do!
If you are running late for a reason or another, that’s ok, it’s life and it happens but make sure to contact the tour operator to let them know.
Take insect repellent
Mosquitoes and other insects can be a nuisance so make sure to take some insect repellent with you.
Don’t drink alcohol before snorkelling
Snorkelling is a great activity and it’s an amazing opportunity to see some of the wonders of the reef but make sure not to drink alcohol before going snorkelling as this can be dangerous.
You can get a drink after the snorkelling but please refrain from doing so before.
The crew won’t serve you alcohol until the end of the snorkelling session anyway but I want to make sure you are aware of it.
Double check the weather forecast
Whitehaven Beach tours take place in most weather conditions. Of course, we all hope you’ll be lucky and get nice weather but there is a slight chance it won’t be the case.
Even if it’s not very nice weather, it’s worth going since it is truly a beautiful place and it would be a shame to leave Australia without seeing it.
But in that having been said, I particularly recommend to look at the weather forecast the day before so you can dress and pack accordingly.
FAQs about Whitehaven Beach Tours from Airlie Beach
Now that you know what are the best tours to Whitehaven from Airlie Beach, it’s time to answer some of your questions.

Can you get to Whitehaven Beach without a tour?
Not really. There are no ferry to Whitehaven Beach which means that you are left with only two options. The first one is to book a tour, the second one is to charter a boat.
Chartering a boat in the Whitsundays is a great thing to do especially since it’s an excellent place for bare boating however, it’s much more expensive.
If you do not have a huge budget, then booking a tour is your only option.
Is it worth going to Whitehaven Beach?
Absolutely! Whitehaven Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, if not THE most beautiful beach. The sand here is like powder and the colours of the water vary from bright turquoise to deep blue. The views are simply stunning.
I’ve travelled around Australia for a year (as well as many other places in the world) and still to this day, this is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.
How long is the boat ride from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven?
The boat ride from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven takes about 2 hours. It depends on the tour you choose and the type of vessel that’s being used, but for most tours, it will take approximately 2 hours one way.
If you opt for Ocean Rafting for example (which is a speed boat), the travel time will be reduced to around 1 hour which will give you more time on the beach.
That having been said, the trip to Whitehaven Beach is sensational. The Whitsundays are so beautiful! You won’t even notice it takes 2 hours.
Can you swim at Whitehaven Beach?
Yes, you can definitely swim at Whitehaven Beach! The water is incredibly clear and it’s usually quite calm.
Just make sure to take all the necessary precautions (especially if you are swimming with children) and also be aware of your own physical abilities when entering the water.
While swimming is allowed, it’s important to note that you will need to wear a wetsuit, especially during the stinger season (November to May).
If you don’t have one, nothing to worry about. All tour operators will provide it.
Are there sharks at Whitehaven Beach?
The Great Barrier Reef acts as a natural barrier against ‘big’ sharks which makes Whitehaven Beach a safe place to swim.
However, it’s very common to see smaller species like lemon sharks. They tend to swim away from you and wouldn’t harm you but it is possible you would see a fin swimming around.
Can you walk on Whitehaven Beach?
Of course. Whitehaven Beach is a beautiful 5km stretch of sand and it’s definitely worth walking along it.
Can you take sand from Whitehaven Beach?
No, you cannot take sand from Whitehaven Beach. It is illegal to do so as the sand is part of a protected National Park.
There are also signs posted around the beach which clearly state that collecting any natural material (including sand) is prohibited.
Even if it wasn’t a national park anyway, you should not be taking sand from anywhere. Let’s be responsible travellers.
Can you eat at Whitehaven Beach?
There aren’t any restaurants or bars on Whitehaven Beach however, most tours will provide lunch on the boat and the BBQ tour even includes a barbecue on the beach.
