Heading to Japan soon and wondering what to wear in Tokyo in November? I’m here to help!
November is a fantastic time to visit Tokyo and, arguably, one of the best months because the weather is nice, it’s dry, you can see all the fall colors and there aren’t many tourists.
As a matter of fact, it’s considered as low season in terms of tourism which means you can get great flight deals.
In terms of weather though, while it is cooler (we are heading towards winter), it’s still very comfortable and you won’t need to pack too many layers or any heavy coats.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to pack for your November trip to Tokyo so you’re sure to take everything you need.

What is the Weather Like in Tokyo in November?
Tokyo in November experiences mild autumn weather with daytime temperatures ranging from 10°C to 17°C (50°F to 63°F).
Evenings can be cooler, with temperatures dropping to around 7°C to 12°C (45°F to 54°F).
Rain is quite rare but it’s always good to be prepared for an occasional shower. As a general thing, it’s one of the driest times of the year which is great news.
This month is perfect for enjoying Tokyo’s parks, gardens, and outdoor attractions as the fall foliage reaches its peak.
Whether you’re exploring historic temples, shopping districts, or enjoying the city’s culinary delights, the cool weather makes it all the more enjoyable.
Essential Packing List for Tokyo in November
You can find below a packing list for Tokyo in November.
Please make sure to take into consideration the time of the month since you will need warmer layers if you are going towards the end of November.
Clothing
- Medium-weight Jacket or Coat: A medium-weight jacket or coat is essential for the cooler mornings and evenings. A stylish trench coat or a wool-blend coat are good options. You can also opt for a light and thin puff jacket.
This kind of jacket is ideal because it's a good extra layer but it's not too warm either.
- Sweaters and Cardigans: Pack a few sweaters or cardigans for layering. These are perfect for keeping warm during the day without feeling too heavy. At the beginning of the month, you might even be able to wear them as top layers since it can be warm-ish during the day.
This is a great cardigan for the autumn season. The color is very fitting for Japan and it's warm enough without being bulky.
- Long-Sleeve Tops: Ideal for layering under your jacket or wearing alone on milder days.
- Trousers and Jeans: Dark jeans or tailored trousers are practical and very versatile. They can be worn with anything and fit perfectly into the Japanese style.
- Skirts or Dresses: If you prefer dresses, opt for those you can pair with light tights. Light wool or knit dresses work well for this season.
This kind of dress is perfect in autumn. It's warm enough but not too much and you can easily pair it with a jacket and ankle boots. On a warmer day, you can wear it without tights as well.
- Leggings: While this is not too common amongst Japanese people, I thought it was a great thing to wear in Japan especially if you’re planning to explore beyond Tokyo. Black leggings go with anything and everything and they are very comfy.
- Underwear
Shoes
- Comfortable Sneakers: Tokyo is a huge city and you will be walking a lot. Even if you take the metro, you will still be walking a lot more than you can imagine. For this reason, I highly recommend taking comfortable sneakers. There aren’t too many cobblestones so Converses, Vans, Nike AirForce and New Balance are all great options.
These sneakers are ideal for Tokyo because they are very comfy, they have a thick sole (which makes it more comfortable when you walk) and they can go with any outfit.
- Ankle Boots: A pair of ankle boots can be great for cooler days and if you want to add a bit of chic to your outfit.
These are perfect for Tokyo. They are pretty much flat but they have a thick sole and a tiny bit of a heel for style.
- Timberland Boots: I thought Timberland boots were ideal in Japan because they are very comfortable, you can walk in them for a long time and they are pretty stylish. Also, you can wear them with jeans as well as a dress or a skirt.
I absolutely loved my Timberlands when I visited Tokyo and I think they are the best kind of shoes you can get. Also, you can wear them with anything!
Accessories
- Scarf: A stylish scarf can add warmth and a pop of color to your outfit, and it’s easy to carry with you if the weather changes.
- Crossbody Bag: A secure crossbody bag is ideal for carrying your essentials while exploring the city. A stylish backpack is also a great option.
- Sunglasses: Even in November, Tokyo can have bright, sunny days, so having a pair of sunglasses is always handy.
- Hat or Beanie: A lightweight hat or beanie can be useful for the cooler evenings or windy days.
Electronics
- Phone & Charger
- Power Bank: You’ll be using your phone a lot between the GPS and Google Translate so having a power bank is always good in case you’re running low on battery.
- Camera
- International Adapter: Japan uses type A and B outlets, so make sure to bring an international adapter if your devices use a different plug type.
This travel adapter for Japan works for devices from the US, Canada, the UK and more.
Paperwork
- Passport & Visa Copies
- Travel Insurance Documents
- Hotel Reservation & Itinerary
- Bank Card + Travel Money Card: Consider a card like Revolut or Wise to avoid high currency exchange fees.
- JR Pass: If you plan to travel around Japan and bought a JR Pass online, don’t forget to take the voucher with you so you can go and exchange it at the station.
What to Wear in Tokyo in November Depending on the Weather
☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️
On sunny days, you can wear a long-sleeve shirt or T-shirt with a light jacket. Pair it with jeans and comfortable sneakers for a day of exploring the city. A scarf adds both warmth and style.
☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️
A sweater and a medium-weight jacket will keep you warm on cloudy days. Pair with trousers or jeans and ankle boots. A scarf will add extra comfort as the temperature dips.
🌧️ If it rains 🌧️
Though rain is rare in November, be prepared with a waterproof jacket and an umbrella. Wear comfortable waterproof shoes like ankle boots to stay dry.
Things Not to Pack For Tokyo in November
- Shorts: It’s too cold for shorts in November.
- High Heels: Unless you have a formal event, high heels aren’t practical for walking in Tokyo’s busy streets and public transportation.
- Light Summer Clothes: It’s better to save your thin summer outfits for warmer months, as Tokyo is cool and requires layers.
- Heavy Winter Coats: While it’s cool, there’s no need for heavy winter gear. A medium-weight jacket is more than enough for November.
- Pyjamas: Unless you want your own pjs specifically, you won’t need them in Japan because every hotel gives you a night gown (and they are very good!).
I hope this was helpful and that you have a better idea of what to expect when visiting Tokyo in November.
