What is the Weather Like in Madrid in November?

November in Madrid is characterized by cool but comfortable autumn weather. Daytime temperatures range from 9°C to 16°C (48°F to 61°F), making it pleasant for walking around.

However, the nights are significantly cooler, with temperatures dropping to 4°C to 9°C (39°F to 48°F), so you’ll definitely want some warmer layers for the evenings.

Madrid typically sees very little rain in November, but it’s always wise to prepare for the occasional shower.

Essential Packing List for Madrid in November

Here’s a breakdown of what to pack for a comfortable and stylish visit to Madrid in November.

Keep in mind that layering is key, as the temperature fluctuates between day and night.

Ultimately, you don’t need too many layers and it doesn’t have to be warm clothes but still some layering is useful.

Also, bear in mind that you will be taking the metro, visiting museums and walking a lot which means that you will feel warm at times even if the temperatures aren’t that high.

Clothing

  • Medium-weight wool Coat or Jacket: A medium-weight coat is ideal for staying warm in the cool mornings and evenings. A wool-blend coat or a lightweight trench coat will work perfectly. Alternatively, if you’d rather have a sporty look, you can opt for a light to medium-weight puff jacket. If you are visiting at the beginning of the month, a leather jacket is also an option.
  • Sweaters & Cardigans: Pack a couple of sweaters or cardigans for layering. They’ll keep you cozy without making you feel too bundled up during the day. Depending on the time of the day, they can even be used as a top layer since you might not even want to wear your coat when the sun is out or when you’re visiting the museums.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: Great for wearing underneath your sweater.
  • Short-sleeve tops: I also recommend taking some short-sleeve tops even if it’s unlikely you’d wear them by themselves. But on a sunny day, they can be a lighter layer underneath your sweater.
  • Jeans & Trousers: Jeans or nice trousers are practical and versatile. You can pair them with any tops. I recommend opting for neutral colors so it’s easier to pair with a top.
  • Long Skirts or Long Dresses with Light Tights: If you prefer wearing dresses or want to pack a couple of outfit to go out, you can take some long dresses. In this case I don’t recommend the summer ones but some autumn long dresses that are still flowy but not too warm will be perfect. In certain cases, you won’t even need tights (especially at the beginning of the month) but it’s always good to pack some light tights. If you are visiting towards the end of the month, a pair of thicker tights can also be useful.
  • Leggings: These are ideal for the plane journey or chill at the hotel. I wouldn’t really wear them outside though since it’s not exactly the Spanish style but ultimately, you can.
  • Pyjamas
  • Underwear

Shoes

  • Comfortable Sneakers: You will be walking a lot in Madrid and while there aren’t as many cobblestones as in Rome or Barcelona, there are still some so I recommend taking some comfortable sneakers (that you already have broken into) with a thick sole if possible. Converses and Vans are also fine if that’s something you find comfortable.
  • Ankle Boots: Ankle boots are both comfortable and stylish so it’s the ideal pair of shoes. You can pair it with a dress, skirt or trousers which is perfect.
  • Knee-High Boots: These are also both practical and stylish and are perfect if you’re planning to wear more dresses.

Accessories

  • Scarf: A scarf is an essential European accessory. We absolutely love scarves and Madrid is no exception. It’s a great accessory to pack because it brings you extra warmth and can be used to spice up your outfit a bit.
  • Crossbody Bag or Backpack: A secure crossbody bag or small stylish backpack is ideal for carrying your essentials while exploring Madrid. Also, since you will probably get rid of some layers and put them back on several times in a day, it will be a great thing to have since you can easily put your sweater in.
  • Sunglasses: Even in November, Madrid can have bright, sunny days, so don’t forget your sunglasses.
  • Hat or Beanie: For the cooler evenings or early mornings, a lightweight beanie or hat is a great addition to your outfit. This will also come in handy during the day if you’re visiting at the end of November.

Electronics

Paperwork

  • Passport & Visa (if applicable)
  • Travel Insurance Documents
  • Hotel Reservation & Itinerary
  • Credit/Debit Card & Some Cash: Spain is fairly card-friendly, but it’s always good to have a little cash on hand for smaller shops or markets.

PRO TIP: We don’t really tip that much in Spain (at least compared to the US) but it’s always nice to leave a small tip so having some coins you can leave on the table is always nice.

What to Wear in Madrid in November Depending on the Weather

☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️

On sunny days, you wear a long dress or skirt with light tights (or even no tights) and boots as well as a trench coat.

☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️

A medium-weight coat over a sweater is perfect for cloudy days. You’ll want to wear warmer bottoms like jeans or trousers, along with ankle boots to keep your feet comfortable as temperatures drop. A scarf will add extra warmth as needed.

🌧️ If it rains 🌧️

While rain is rare in Madrid in November, it’s wise to be prepared with an umbrella. Opt for comfortable waterproof shoes like ankle boots, so you can stay dry while you explore.

Things Not to Pack for Madrid in November

  • Shorts: It’s too chilly for shorts in November unless they are autumn / winter shorts that you pair up with tights.
  • Summer Clothes: Madrid’s November weather requires layers, so leave the thin, summery items at home.
  • Heavy Winter Gear: You won’t need heavy winter coats. A medium-weight jacket and layers will do the trick.
  • High Heels: While stylish, Madrid’s cobblestone streets make walking in heels uncomfortable and impractical. Stick with flat shoes or low boots unless you have a party planned.

I hope this guide helps you feel prepared for your November trip to Madrid.
