Visiting Italy in November and wondering what you should wear? I’ve got you covered!

Italy is one of my favourite countries in the world and I love visiting at any time of the year. November is no exception! Of course since we are transitioning from autumn to winter, the temperatures get cooler but it also means that there are fewer crowds, making it a peaceful time to explore.

From the historic streets of Rome to the canals of Venice, Italy in November offers a more relaxed and authentic experience, though you should be prepared for some potential rain and cooler evenings.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to pack for your November trip to Italy, ensuring you stay stylish and comfortable as you explore the country’s cities, countryside, and coast.

What is the Weather Like in Italy in November?

Italy’s weather in November can vary greatly depending on the region:

  • Northern Italy (Milan, Venice, Turin): Temperatures range from 4°C to 12°C (39°F to 54°F). It can be quite chilly, and fog or rain is common, particularly in cities like Venice and Milan.
  • Central Italy (Rome, Florence): Temperatures range from 8°C to 17°C (46°F to 63°F). The weather is cooler, but still mild during the day, with some possible rain.
  • Southern Italy (Naples, Sicily, Amalfi Coast): Temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). The south remains relatively warm which is nice but it can still be quite cool especially towards the end of the month.

Essential Packing List for Italy in November

Below is the perfect packing list for your November trip to Italy. Please note that you need to adapt it slightly depending on the region you visit.

If you are heading north you will need warmer layers whereas if you are staying in the south, lighter clothes will be better.

Clothing

  • Coat or Jacket: If you are visiting the north, then a warm coat will be ideal. I also recommend taking a warm waterproof trench coat since it’s ideal for city sightseeing and in case of rain. A puffer jacket also works well for both warmth and style. If you’re staying in the south, a light puff jacket or mid-season jacket should be enough.
  • Knit Sweaters and Cardigans: Pack a few knit sweaters and cardigans for layering. These are perfect for keeping warm during the day without feeling too heavy. If you are heading north, make sure to pack cozy knit sweaters. If you’re staying in the south lighter ones and cardigans will be enough.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: Ideal for layering under your sweater.
  • Short-Sleeve T-shirts: These can be worn under your sweater if you are visiting the south or even by themselves sometimes (the beginning of the month in Southern Italy can still be a bit warm). If you are in the north, you can use them as extra layers.
  • Trousers and Jeans: Jeans are ideal because they are well fitted for all kind of autumn weather and you can pair them with anything. Even in the south where the temperatures are higher you will still be able to wear them comfortably.
  • Skirts or Dresses with Tights: Autumn dresses and skirts paired with tights can be a great option if you are visiting a city. If you are heading south and it’s a bit warmer you can wear them without the tights.
  • A Scarf: Italians love wearing scarves and that’s because they are very practical. I highly recommend taking one for Italy in November. In the south, a light one will be enough whereas you should opt for a warmer one in the north.
  • Umbrella: November often brings rain, so pack a small, portable umbrella.
  • Leggings: These are perfect for the plane journey and can also be used if you go hiking.

Footwear

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: No matter where you go, you’ll be walking a lot in Italy so bring comfortable shoes. Comfortable sneakers are essential. You can take Vans or Converses but it’s preferable to take shoes with a thicker sole and if they are somewhat waterproof that would also be better.
  • Ankle Boots: A pair of ankle boots can be both fashionable and practical for cooler weather and light rain. In Northern Italy you can also take a pair of knee high boots since it’s much colder.

PRO TIP: Break in your shoes before the trip! Italian cities have lots of cobblestone streets, so comfortable footwear is essential.

Accessories

  • Crossbody Bag: A secure crossbody bag is ideal for carrying your essentials while exploring Italy’s cities. It also helps deter pickpockets in busy tourist areas.
  • Sunglasses: Even in November, Italy can have bright, sunny days, especially in the south.
  • Hat or Beanie: A warm hat or beanie is useful for the cooler evenings and can add a chic touch to your outfit. This is not essential if you’re visiting the south of Italy but if you’re heading North it will be a useful piece of clothing.
  • Jewellery: Keep it simple because there are a lot of pickpockets in cities like Rome or Venice.

Electronics

  • Phone & Charger
  • Power Bank: You’ll likely be using your phone for navigation, photos, and more, so a power bank is handy.
  • Camera
  • International Adapter: Italy uses type C and F outlets, so bring an adapter if your devices use a different plug type.

Paperwork

  • Passport & Copies
  • Travel Insurance Documents
  • Hotel Reservation & Itinerary
  • Bank Card + Travel Money Card: Consider a card like Revolut or Wise to avoid high currency exchange fees.
