Most of the time, the best photo opportunities cannot be planned and you never know when that will be; however, it’s true that there are certain places that are simply naturally photogenic and Instagrammable.
Holbox is one of the most beautiful islands in the world and there are definitely loads of places where you can take stunning photos.
In this article, I will tell you everything you need to know about the best Instagram spots on Holbox, where to find them and will give you some photography tips.

1. Playa Holbox
Playa Holbox is the main beach on Isla Holbox. The water is crystal clear and the sand so white. It makes for a perfect spot for photos.
There is a lot of seaweed on the beach so I recommend going in the water. It’s very shallow so you and the person who takes the photo can walk for a while.
I also recommend going early in the morning (around 7:30AM) because you’ll get a bit of the golden hour and its nice colours, the sun will be low so it will not ruin your photos and finally, it’s not busy so you get more opportunities.
2. Punta Mosquito
Punta Mosquito is the most beautiful spot on Holbox so naturally, it’s also one of the most Instagrammable locations!
It’s located on the northern part of the island and is a nature reserve with crystal-clear shallow water.
This is by far one of the most beautiful sea waters I’ve ever seen!
There are two ways you can get there. The first one is on foot but you need to walk for about an hour in the shallow water.
The second one is with this 3-island tour.
Once you get there, you can take loads of photos on the beach or the water.
3. Stage in Central Park
If you head to central park (it’s the main square), you will find a stage in the middle of the square.
This stage is always decorated with a mural. In 2024, the mural was done by Pinta o Muere who is quite well known for its street art around the Yucatan peninsula.
This is a great photo spot since it’s so colourful.
PRO TIP: I recommend going there in the morning (before 11AM) because it will be very quiet. It gets quite busy at night so you will have a lot of people on your photos in the evening.
4. Streets of Holbox
Holbox is such a cute place and the fact that there are no cars and they are all dirt roads makes it particularly pretty.
All these streets are very cute. There are palm trees, cute shops, lights and golf carts.
A lot of them are also empty, especially if you go in the morning so you’ll find a lot of photo opportunities.
Ideally, you’ll want to stand on the side, near to a sign or something to frame the photo.
5. Street art in Holbox
Holbox is a paradise when it comes to street art. There are murals literally everywhere!
You can find some Mayan inspired pieces but also a lot of cultural pieces (like the dog in the photo above).
Since it is street art and the murals change all the time, I can’t tell you exactly where to go.
You simply need to walk around and find the ones you like the most.
Of course, the main stage in Central park is always a good spot but the ones in the streets can make for much prettier photos.
6. Isla de los Pajaros
Isla de los Pajaros (which means bird island) is also one of the islands you will visit if you opt for the 3-island tour.
It’s known for being home to a colony of flamingos and while it’s true that the water is not as clear as on Playa Holbox or Punta Mosquito, there is a wooden structure on the side that makes for a good photo spot.
7. Holbox Letters on the Beach
If you head to Playa Holbox, you will find the Holbox letters. They are a great photo spot. You can go next to the letters or even in front and will have the sea in the background.
I particularly recommend going there at sunset time as well because the colours are fabulous.
The only downside to that though is that a lot of people try to get photos at that time so you might not be able to (or you’ll have to be quick).
8. Playa Holbox at sunset
The sunsets on Holbox are incredible and honestly you’ll never get tired of them!
I recommend heading to Playa Holbox 1 hour before sunset so you can take beautiful photos of the beach and beach clubs during the golden hour.
You can then make your way towards the Holbox letters and the pier when you’re closer to the time the sun actually sets.
You can get a great pic with the letters and the sun in between.
9. Turistica Chair on Playa Holbox
Located next to the Mojito Beach Club, Morgan’s Paradise Holbox Tours is a tour agency that has some very Instagrammable features such as that big chair on the beach.
It’s quite a cool one so you can take beautiful photos, especially if you go early in the morning.
10. Bars and Restaurants
Most bars and restaurants on Holbox are very Instagrammable. They also serve delicious cocktails like these mezcalitas and tacos that are great for pictures.
I particularly recommend Tuch. It’s close to the beach and they have a couple of swings.
Barba HBX is also a great spot with the neon letters and pretty cocktails.
11. Arte Sano Hotel
I stayed at Arte Sano Hotel during my stay on Holbox and it’s a very cute hotel with a very Instagrammable setting so if you choose to stay here as well, you can take photos with the thatched roofs and the swimming pool.
12. Holbox Sign at the ferry terminal
When you arrive on Holbox with the ferry, one of the first things you’ll see is the Holbox sign.
This one is also a good photo opportunity.
The background is not as nice as the one on the beach but the letters are nicer since they feature everything Holbox is famous for like the flamingos and whale sharks.
13. Bonus: Yalahau Cenote
I’m adding this one as a bonus because technically it’s not on isla Holbox however, it’s accessible from Holbox with the 3-island tour.
It’s an open cenote and there is a tower with a 360-degree view next to it.
I’ll admit that you have to stretch your arms a bit but you can still get beautiful photos with the cenote and the lands behind.
