A quick history of Brighton bathing boxes

The bathing boxes in Brighton are actually way older than you may think!

The first ones started to appear in the late 1800s. At this point, they were just little shacks near the edge of the water.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the tram line from St Kilda to Brighton is completed and that’s when a lot of people started applying to buy one of these boxes.

Over the years, the bathing boxes were moved several times.

The city of Brighton had planned various things for the promenade and these tiny houses were kind of in the way.

That, plus the fact that some of them were destroyed because of storms.

The city even tried to get rid of them altogether.

Fortunately for us, that didn’t happen! And that’s a great thing for the area as it became super popular since!

They were usually built to store belongings and be able to change to go swimming. Back in the days, wearing a swimming costume wasn’t well seen so it was coming in handy to be able to change on the beach without being seen.

Nowadays, they haven’t changed much really. They are still used as storage and places to come in summer to relax for a day. There is no electricity in them.

Because they became such a hotspot though, prices have raised too! They can be sold for over $300,000 now!
