How to choose how many days you should stay in Melbourne?

First of all, it’s important to clarify what you mean by Melbourne. Most visitors who arrive in Melbourne also want to explore the surrounding areas. If that is your plan, then you will need at least 5 days but 7 to 10 days would be ideal.

If by Melbourne, you mean only the city itself, 3 days is the ideal minimum amount of time.

Is 1 day in Melbourne enough?

If you only have one day in Melbourne, you will be visiting the CBD only. This includes the most famous sites, street art and gardens.

I particularly recommend booking a walking tour as it’s a great way to make the best of your time. Info here.

Are 2 days enough to visit Melbourne?

With 2 days in Melbourne, things start getting a bit more interesting. You will, of course, be able to explore the CBD but also other suburbs such as St Kilda, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick and go to Queen Victoria Market.

Are 3 days enough to visit Melbourne?

Spending 3 days in Melbourne is the IDEAL (minimum) amount of time for discovering the city. You can get pretty much everything covered in 3 days. Well, not everything but the main attractions at least!

In 3 days, you will discover the CDB, St Kilda, Brighton Beach bathing boxes, Fitzroy, Carlton, Collingwood and Brunswick.

You will get enough time to wander around, go shopping, eat plenty of delicious food, see great views and really soak up the atmosphere of Australia’s capital of culture!

Are 4 days enough to discover Melbourne?

With 4 days, you can start exploring the surrounding areas and go on a day trip. I recommend spending 3 days in Melbourne and going on a Great Ocean Road day tour.

You can also choose to spend the full 4 days in the city and start visiting more markets and the docklands.

Although I always recommend to spend at least 2 days on the Great Ocean Road and to rent a car, if you only have one day, it’s better to book a tour. Prices and info here.

Alternatively, you can also do 2 days in Melbourne, one day trip to the Great Ocean Road and one day trip to Phillip Island.

Are 5 days in Melbourne enough?

5 days in Melbourne is the perfect amount of time to discover both the city and the main surrounding attractions.

You can stay 3 or 4 days in Melbourne and then opt for 1 or 2 day trips amongst the following:

– Great Ocean Road. See prices.
– Phillip Island. See prices.
– Yarra Valley. See prices.
– Mornington Peninsula. See prices.
– Ballarat. See prices.

Should you stay for 6 days or more in Melbourne?

There is no need to stay for more than 5 days in the city itself. As previously mentioned, after 3 or 4 days, it’s better to go on day trips.

If you have more than 6 days on your hands though, you should consider going on weekend trips from Melbourne. The state of Victoria is home to fantastic national parks. You will love it!

I particularly recommend going to Wilson’s Promontory or the Grampians. There are amazing rentals in Victoria that you can book for a weekend and go explore from there!

I hope this article will help you decide how long you need in Melbourne. Just remember, it’s all about what you want to do and whether you want to stay in the city or not! These recommendations are minimum amounts of time. If you can stay more in Melbourne, it’s always better! There is so much to see in Melbourne!
