Are you heading to London in September and looking for the best things to wear? I’m here to help!

I’ve been living in the UK since 2016 and if there is one thing I definitely learnt how to do quickly, it’s dressing and packing for the weather.

September is a great time of the year to visit London because we usually get a bit of an Indian summer (British version of course) so it’s usually quite nice weather. Obviously though, this is still England so you need to be prepared for rain at all times.

In this article, I tell you exactly what you should wear in London in September.

What is the weather like in London in September?

london in september

London in September experiences a mix of mild temperatures, with highs around 20°C (68°F) and lows dipping to 13°C (55°F)

While it’s often pleasant, you should expect some rain as autumn approaches, so packing layers for unpredictable weather is key.

September is still one of the best months to visit and you have a pretty good chance of having good weather but it’s still the UK. The weather is completely unpredictable and you should be prepared for anything.

Essential Packing List for London in September

Now that you know what to expect in terms of temperatures, it’s time to look at what you should be packing for London in September.

Clothing

  • T-shirts and tops. I recommend taking a mix of short and long sleeves. You will mainly wear short sleeves but it can come in handy to have a couple of longer sleeve t-shirts or blouses in case of bad weather.
  • Sweater or Cardigan: Perfect for layering in cooler mornings and evenings. I’d recommend keeping it in your bag all day long though since the weather can change quickly and it’s good to have your layers with you.
  • Jeans or Trousers: Classic options for city sightseeing, it will be ideal for the weather since they should be the perfect amount of warmth.
  • Rain Jacket or Waterproof Coat: This is essential due to the likelihood of rain showers. For London, I recommend getting a stylish raincoat so you can use it as your jacket all day long.
  • A Jacket or trench coat. Alternatively, you can opt for a stylish jacket such as a jean jacket and take an umbrella in case of rain. I would recommend a jacket you can zip up though since it can get quite windy when it rains.
  • A dress with tights. If you have a light autumn dress that can be paired with tights, this will be ideal for London in September. No matter what, avoid summer dresses because it’s unlikely you’d use them.
  • Underwear and socks
  • Pyjamas

Shoes

  • Comfortable Sneakers: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so make sure your shoes are durable and weather-appropriate. I particularly recommend shoes such as Air Force because they are made of leather and rubber which is better in case of rain.
  • Chelsea Boots. If you have a pair of leather Chelsea boots, these can be ideal since they are comfortable and stylish.

Bags

  • Purse. Make sure to take a handbag, ideally with at least one pocket with easy access so you can get your bank card easily when paying for the tube. A crossbody bag is also appropriate.
  • Daypack or Tote Bag: For storing essentials like an umbrella, water bottle, or guidebook.

Accessories

  • Compact Umbrella: A must in London for surprise showers.
  • Sunglasses: Even though autumn is around the corner, sunny days still occur.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: For staying hydrated while out and about.

Electronics

  • Phone & Charger
  • Power Bank
  • Camera
  • Travel Adapter (Type G, UK plug). If you forget it, don’t worry, they sell it everywhere in London but it’s useful to get it in advance especially since you can buy an international adapter that you can use in other places in the world too.

Paperwork

  • Passport & Copies
  • Travel Insurance Documents
  • Hotel Reservation & Itinerary
  • Contactless Payment Method: For easy use on London’s public transport.
