Travelling to Italy this year and wondering what to wear in Rome in March? I’m here to help!
March is a fantastic time to visit the Eternal City, as the weather starts to warm up, the crowds are smaller than in peak summer months, and the city’s famous landmarks—like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Vatican City—are easier to explore without long queues.
While I love visiting Rome in summer, I usually try to go during the low season because I find it to be a more enjoyable experience overall.
Places like the Colosseum can be so crowded and I live for avoiding crowds! March is an ideal month for that but since we are in between season, that also means it’s a bit harder to plan your outfits.
March is a transitional month, so packing for both mild and cool weather is key.
In this article you’ll find everything you need to know to pack for Rome in March.
What is the Weather Like in Rome in March?
March in Rome brings the first signs of spring, but the weather can still be unpredictable, with a mix of sunny days, cloudy skies, and occasional rain showers.
- 🌡 Temperature range: 7°C (45°F) to 17°C (63°F)
- 🌧 Rainfall: Around 6-7 rainy days per month
- ☀️ Daylight: Longer days, with sunset around 6:00-6:30 PM
Mornings and evenings are a bit chilly, but afternoons can be pleasant and warm. Using light layers is essential so you can adjust your outfit throughout the day.
Essential Packing List for Rome in March
You can find below my recommended packing list for Rome in March.
Please bear in mind that each person is different.
We all have our own style so while those are my recommendations, you need to make sure you adapt it to your own style.
Clothing
- Light to Medium Jacket – A light trench coat or a light puff coat is ideal. A leather jacket is also a great option for a trendy, Italian-inspired look.
- Cardigans – Perfect for layering and dressing up a casual outfit. It will keep you warm in the morning and you can open it up during the day or even take it off it’s warm.
- Short-Sleeve Tops & Blouses
- Light Sweaters – A cashmere or wool-blend sweater keeps you warm without bulk.
- Jeans & Trousers – A mix of jeans, tailored trousers, or wide-leg pants (I particularly love these because they are incredibly comfortable and look very chic).
- Dresses & Skirts with tights – If you love wearing dresses and skirts, you definitely can do so at that time of the year. I recommend light wool dresses or cotton ones that you can pair with tights.
- Pyjamas
Footwear
- Comfortable Leather Ankle Boots – Ideal for cobblestone streets and unpredictable weather.
- Fashionable Sneakers – Comfortable sneakers are ideal for Rome because you will be walking a lot and the cobblestones can be tough on your feet.
Bags
- Crossbody Bag with Zipper – Pickpocketing is common in Rome, so a secure bag is a must.
- A money belt – While this is not the most stylish of items on this list, this is by far one of my favourite travel items because you can wear it under your clothes and keep your valuables safe.
- Tote Bag – Handy for carrying extra layers, water bottles, or souvenirs.
Accessories
- Light Scarf – Like the French, Italians love scarves, and they add both warmth and elegance. In March you won’t need a bulky wool scarf but a light one will be appreciated, especially in the evening.
- Umbrella – A compact travel umbrella is useful for unexpected showers. While it’s not essential, it’s better to take it with you because the ones they sell in the streets in Rome are cheap and quite bad quality.
- Sunglasses – Rome is very sunny, even in March.
Electronics
- Power Bank – Long days exploring means you’ll need extra phone battery life.
- Universal Travel Adapter
- Camera/Phone
Paperwork
- Passport & Copies
- Travel Insurance
- Hotel & Train Reservations

Things Not to Wear in Rome in March
🚫 Heavy Winter Coats – It’s not freezing, so a medium-weight coat is sufficient.
🚫 High Heels – Cobblestone streets make walking difficult; opt for flats instead.
🚫 Flip-Flops or Open-Toe Sandals – Too cold and not suitable for walking long distances.
🚫 Athleisure or Gym Clothes – Italians dress stylishly, so avoid leggings and sweatpants unless you’re at the gym.
🚫 Overly Bright or Flashy Outfits – Rome is chic but understated; stick to neutral and classic colors.
