What is the weather like in Edinburgh in December
Edinburgh is pretty cold in December. The temperatures usually are between 1°C and 7°C (33°F and 44°F) and there are on average 11 days of rain.
While this can sound pretty bad, it’s actually nothing you should be worried about. Edinburgh is beautiful in winter and there are so many things you can do. The weather is part of the charm! But it’s true that you need to be prepared for both cold and rain.
Essential Packing List for Edinburgh in December
Clothes
- A warm coat (ideally a waterproof one). As already mentioned, it will be cold in Edinburgh in December so make sure you have a nice and warm coat. If it’s a waterproof one, that’s even better!
- Jumpers and fleeces. Take all your best jumpers and fleeces to keep yourself warm.
- Long Sleeve T-shirts. They will keep you warm and allow for another layer underneath if needed.
- Jeans and trousers. Preferably quite thick ones to keep you warm.
- Wool dress and tights. If you feel more comfortable with a warm dress and tights, then go for it. Warm tights can keep you warmer than trousers and if you really feel cold, you can wear the tights underneath your jeans.
- Leggings for the plane journey.
- Underwear / Bras
- Socks
- Pyjamas
Shoes
- Comfortable sneakers. You will be walking a lot in Edinburgh and since there are a lot of cobblestone streets, make sure you wear comfortable sneakers
- Leather boots. These can also be handy in Edinburgh or when you visit some of the towns nearby. They are a bit more stylish and should be comfortable. Timberland boots are ideal but you can also opt for a more stylish option as long as you know you can walk with them for a long time.
Bags
- 1 luggage or travel backpack. There are a lot of cobblestone streets in Edinburgh and you will probably be moving around a lot so I recommend taking a backpack. It will make it easier. A suitcase is also suitable though.
- 1 hand bag for the day when you visit Edinburgh
- 1 day backpack. You will probably go hiking or at least exploring the outdoors so a small backpack for the day will come in handy.
Accessories
- An umbrella
- A beanie.
- A scarf (preferably a wool one)
- Gloves
Electronics
- International adapter (The UK uses type G sockets)
- Phone charger
- Headphones
- Power bank
- Camera
Paperwork
- Passport
- Travel Insurance
- Cash and/or Revolut / Transferwise card
- Bank card
