What is the weather like in Scotland in Autumn

fall in edinburgh

The fall season goes from September to November in Scotland. Temperatures vary between 8 and 15°C (46-59°F) but it can be colder if you are visiting in November.

As a general thing, Scotland is considered quite cold in Autumn.

It’s also very likely to rain since there are between 13 and 23 rainy days at that time of the year.

All of that having been said, don’t let it dishearten you because fall is an excellent season to visit Scotland.

The colours of the trees are unbeatable and the midges are gone which means you can truly experience the wilderness.

Essential Packing List for Scotland in Autumn

Bags

  • 1 luggage or travel backpack. There are a lot of cobblestone streets in Edinburgh and you will probably be moving around a lot so I recommend taking a backpack. It will make it easier. A suitcase is also suitable though.
  • 1 hand bag for the day when you visit Edinburgh
  • 1 day backpack. You will probably go hiking or at least exploring the outdoors so a small backpack for the day will come in handy.

Clothes

  • A warm rain jacket and/or a coat. This is a must have item in Scotland since it rains a lot. In autumn, I recommend taking a thicker rain jacket because it’s also a bit cold.
  • Jumpers or fleeces. Again, it will be quite cold so make sure you have some nice and warm jumpers.
  • T-shirts. I recommend taking both short sleeves and long sleeves. In September, you will be using short sleeves whereas in November, long sleeves are better.
  • Jeans and trousers. Make sure you take comfortable trousers for when you are in the highlands or hiking and jeans to visit Edinburgh.
  • Leggings for the plane journey or when you go hiking.
  • Waterproof hiking trousers can also come in handy, especially if you go to Glencoe or the Isle of Skye.
  • Underwear / Bras
  • Socks
  • Pyjamas

Shoes

  • Comfortable sneakers. You will be walking a lot in Edinburgh and since there are a lot of cobblestone streets, make sure you wear comfortable sneakers
  • Hiking boots or shoes. When you explore the highlands, you will go on walks and these will come in handy. If they are Gore Tex that’s even better since a lot of the hiking trails can be muddy.
  • Leather boots. These can also be handy in Edinburgh or when you visit some of the towns. They are a bit more stylish and should be comfortable. Timberland boots are ideal for that.

Accessories

  • An umbrella
  • A beanie. As I said, it can be quite cold so you will be happy to have it.
  • A scarf
  • Mittens or gloves

  • Passport
  • Travel Insurance
  • Cash and/or Revolut / Transferwise card
  • Bank card
