There is a huge book fair in Miami this November 📚

If you are a bit of a bookworm, this one is for you!

Located in downtown Miami, the Miami Book Fair takes over the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus for eight days every November.

The bit worth understanding before you plan anything is that it’s really two events in one. The first five days are author talks and ticketed evenings. The Street Fair, which is the big outdoor part with the exhibitors, the food and the music, is only the final weekend.

Friday is free for everyone, so if you just want to wander the Street Fair without spending money, that’s your day.

And the best part about it is that the college parking garage is free for the entire run, which in downtown Miami is almost unheard of. 🅿️

Please note that while I try to be as accurate as possible, I always recommend checking the official website and socials. Things can change quickly and as much as I try to stay on top of things, it’s not always the case.

📚 What is it?

The Miami Book Fair is the largest, longest-running literary festival in the country.

It started back in 1984 as a two-day thing called Books by the Bay, and it has grown into something enormous.

These days it pulls in more than 500 authors and up to 200,000 people, with over 150 national and international exhibitors and around 600 community volunteers. 📖

So what does that actually look like on the ground? The Street Fair weekend is essentially a book market that takes over downtown. They close off the streets around the campus and fill them with stalls, with more in the campus plaza, in the Building 1 atrium and in a spot called the Reading Garden.

There are around 200 stalls. You’ll find bookstores, publishers and university presses, a comic book and graphic novel section, Spanish-language booksellers, children’s and young adult stands, religious and spiritual books, and educational stalls run by museums and historical societies. 📚

There are also artisans selling things like jewelry, apparel, stickers and puzzles, plus food and music all weekend.

You’ll also find indie authors, selling their own books themselves.  ✍️

Running alongside all of that are the author sessions (some are free).

What makes it feel very Miami is that the whole thing runs in three languages. English, Spanish and Haitian Creole.

If you’re bringing children, Children’s Alley is the bit to head for. There are hands-on workshops like mask making, bookmarks and nature journals, plus theater shows, magic and music sessions. 🎨

The author line-up includes Tayari Jones, Bonnie Garmus, Marlon James, Brad Thor, Tony Shalhoub, Victoria Aveyard, Abby Phillip and Ali Novak.
