Are you spending some time on the Amalfi Coast and want to discover the Path of the Gods and Positano? Perfect!
In this itinerary I tell you exactly how you can see both in one day!
The path of the Gods is one of the best hikes in the world and it’s well worth the time and effort.
Positano on the other hand, is one of the most famous towns on the Amalfi Coast and a must see in Italy.
While it used to be more of a hidden gem, it’s now a hot spot for tourists and celebrities so if you are visiting in August, get prepared for some crowds. Regardless, it’s beautiful and definitely a place you should see.

Path of the Gods and Positano Day Itinerary
You will start your day in the small village of Bomerano which is where the most scenic part of the Path of the Gods starts.
To get there, it will depend on where you start from. If you’re coming from Amalfi, there is a bus available. Otherwise, you will need to get a private transfer or opt for a tour from Sorrento for example.
Stop 1: Bomerano

When you get to Bomerano, the first thing I recommend you do is to get sandwiches. The Path of the Gods takes about 4 hours to complete (even a bit more if you take the stairs all the way down to Positano) so it’s good to have some food with you.
Also, nothing beats a picnic with these views!
You can get an italian sandwich from one of the local shops. I particularly recommend l’angolo dei sapori. The sandwiches are delicious and they open very early which is practical.
PRO TIP: Make sure to take loads of water with you especially if you are hiking in summer.
In the village, you will find the start of the path of the Gods. Follow the signs and start walking.
Stop 2: Path of the Gods

The Path of the Gods from Bomerano to Positano is 9 km long and takes about 4 hours to complete.
This is a popular path and it’s well indicated but I also recommend following the route on Alltrails to be sure of where you are going.
The path is quite shady which is convenient especially in summer.

The views over the coast are absolutely stunning. You will be amazed! There are also a lot of interesting rock formations to look at.
There isn’t much on the path so make sure to pack enough water and food.
Just before reaching Nocelle though you will find a small café that serves delicious lemonades. It’s called the Grotta Degli Dei (the gods’ cave). There are some stairs to get down there but it’s a good place for a break.
Stop 3: Nocelle

You will then reach the village of Nocelle. This is also a good spot for a break. There are also restaurants here where you can get lunch.
You can also find a bus stop in Nocelle where you can take the Amalfi Coast bus to Positano. If you feel tired or don’t want to go down the long series of steps to Positano, this is a great option.
Otherwise, keep going to Montepertuso. This includes a bit of walking on the side of the road but it’s still quite scenic.
Stop 4: Montepertuso

Montepertuso is also a great place for a break and there are toilets as well as restaurants and cafés.
You will also find a bus stop there. If you keep going, you will start the stairs to Positano.
I won’t lie, those steps are a bit intense. You are going down so it’s not technically hard but it can make your legs shake a bit.
Having said that, it’s very rewarding and you get wonderful views over Positano.
Stop 5: Positano

Once you reach Positano, you can walk along the Cristoforo Colombo. It’s the most famous street in the town and boasts fantastic views.
If you fancy a drink, Bar Franco is particularly famous for its views and Aperol Spritz but it’s a bit on the expensive side. Li Galli bistrot is located a bit further up but the views are just as nice and it’s a lot cheaper.

After that, start making your way down towards the main beach.
You will walk in the small narrow streets.
They are full of small shops, gelato parlours and more. If you’d like to bring back some souvenirs, you will find plenty here, especially lemon themed!
Once you reach the beach, you’ll find a lot of bars and beach clubs. If your budget allows it, they have chairs and umbrellas you can hire.
Otherwise, there is a small section of public beach on the right hand side. It’s quite busy but it’s free.

Make sure to walk around the streets near the beach. You’ll find more boutiques and food shops.
PRO TIP: Positano is a bit of a celebrity hot spot so keep your eyes open as it’s not unusual to bump into someone famous. I saw Jeremy Jenner there last time I was in Positano.
I hope this article has helped you plan your day in Positano and the path of the gods. It’s such a fantastic place, you’ll love it!
