NYC in December is filled with festive holiday decorations, ice skating rinks, and the iconic Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. It’s nothing short of iconic (I mean, we’ve all seen Christmas movies set in NYC so I bet you’re super excited).

However, winter is in full swing, so packing the right gear is essential to enjoying your time in the Big Apple.

New York in December can be quite cold, with occasional snow and biting winds, so it’s important to pack warm layers, especially if you plan on exploring the city’s many outdoor attractions.

In this article, I tell you everything you need to know about packing for NYC in December.

What is the Weather Like in New York City in December?

nyc in december

New York City in December can get cold, with average temperatures ranging between 0°C and 15°C (32°F to 59°F).

Daytime temperatures average around 6°C (43°F), but the wind chill can make it feel much colder, especially in the evenings and early mornings when temperatures can dip below freezing.

Snow is also possible, but more likely toward the end of the month.

With such a wide range of temperatures, layering is key to staying comfortable throughout the day.

You’ll also want to prepare for some windy and wet weather, so keep this in mind when choosing outerwear and footwear.

Essential Packing List for New York City in December

While NYC is beautiful in December, it’s very important to dress appropriately because it will be cold and there is no way you can enjoy the magic of NYC if you are too cold and wet.

In this packing list, you will find everything you will need.

Please bear in mind that the key here is to use layers and warm layers. Also, make sure to pack some festive outfits since I’m sure you’ll want to take loads of photos.

Ultimately, if you haven’t taken everything you need, it’s not the end of the world. NYC is packed with shops and you can always find more things there.

Clothing

  • Heavy Winter Coat: A warm, insulated winter coat is a must. Look for one that is windproof and water-resistant, as the wind in NYC can be strong, and it might rain or snow. A wool coat, puff jacket or a down jacket is ideal. I highly recommend taking a coat that is a bit long (at least mid-thighs) because it will keep you a lot warmer.
  • Sweaters & Knitwear: Pack cozy and warm sweaters for layering over your base layers. Wool or cashmere sweaters are great for staying warm without adding too much bulk but don’t hesitate to opt for warm ones. Also, turtleneck knit sweaters can be a great option since they will also protect your neck.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: Comfortable long-sleeve shirts or turtlenecks are perfect for layering under sweaters or jackets. Fabrics such as cotton and merino wool are best to keep you warm.
  • Bodysuits: I find them to be the best base layer you can wear because they also protect your lower back and since they are tucked into your trousers, they don’t let cold air go through.
  • Tank tops: These can also be a great base layer since you can wear it under your t-shirt and it adds one more layer without being too bulky.
  • Thermal Layers: If you dread the cold a lot, then thermal tops and leggings will keep you extra warm during colder days or if you’re planning on spending extended periods outside. These can easily be worn under your trousers.
  • Wool Trousers: Opt for heavier wool-blend trousers. If you’re prone to feeling cold, consider packing fleece-lined leggings or thermal pants.
  • Fleece Lined Leggings: If you want some extra warmth, these ‘fluffy’ leggings are life savers. They look a bit more casual but they are so comfortable and will keep you warm.
  • Winter dresses with thick tights. If you like wearing dresses more than trousers then that’s also an option. Opt for knit dresses with thick opaque tights.

Footwear

  • Waterproof Boots: A pair of insulated, waterproof boots is essential. You’ll be doing a lot of walking, and New York’s streets can get slushy with snow and rain. Make sure they have good grip for icy sidewalks. These can be ankle boots, Timberland boots or similar.
  • Knee high boots: I also particularly recommend taking higher boots since they will protect your calves and keep you warmer. Make sure to take flat ones though since you will be walking a lot.
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: You will be walking around a lot so if you’d like to take a pair of warm and waterproof sneakers, that’s also a good option but make sure you can wear them with thick socks.

Bags

  • Crossbody Bag or Backpack: A crossbody bag or a compact backpack is ideal for carrying your belongings around.
  • Tote Bag: Useful for carrying extra layers or purchases, especially if you plan on doing some holiday shopping.

Accessories

  • Warm Scarf: A large, cozy scarf will protect your neck from cold winds and can be used to cover your head in particularly blustery weather.
  • Gloves: Insulated, touchscreen-compatible gloves are a must so you can use your phone without taking them off.
  • Hat or Earmuffs: A wool or fleece hat will keep your head warm, while earmuffs are a stylish option for keeping your ears toasty without messing up your hair.

Electronics

Paperwork

  • Passport & Visa (if required)
  • Travel Insurance
  • Hotel Reservations & Itinerary
  • Bank Card & Cash: While most places in NYC accept cards, it’s always helpful to have some cash on hand for tipping or small purchases like coffee from the street food vans.

What to Wear in New York City in December Depending on the Weather

☀️ If It’s Sunny

Even on a sunny day, temperatures will be cold, so wear a knit dress with opaque tights under your winter coat. Wear a merino top under your dress for extra layers and knee high boots.

❄️ If It’s Snowy

Layer up with thermal tops, a cozy sweater, and an insulated coat. Pair it with waterproof boots, a scarf, and gloves. A waterproof backpack or tote is useful for keeping your belongings dry.

🌧️ If It’s Rainy

A water-resistant coat with a hood is ideal. Opt for waterproof boots and bring along an umbrella.

Things Not to Wear in New York City in December

  • Light Jackets or Coats: Leave the lighter jackets behind, as they won’t keep you warm enough in NYC’s December weather.
  • High Heels: The uneven, often icy sidewalks make heels impractical. Stick to flat, comfortable shoes or boots.
  • Thin Fabrics: Lightweight clothes won’t offer enough warmth, so focus on thicker, insulating fabrics.

I hope this packing guide helps you stay cozy and comfortable during your trip to New York City in December. Enjoy the magical holiday atmosphere!
