What is the Weather Like in Paris in January?

paris in january

January is one of the coldest months in Paris, with temperatures typically ranging between 3°C and 7°C (37°F to 45°F). Frosty mornings, overcast skies, and occasional rain (or even snow but that’s rare) are common, so you’ll want to dress warmly and be prepared for damp weather.

While it can be chilly, January is also one of the quieter times in Paris, making it perfect for enjoying iconic sites like the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and Notre-Dame without the usual crowds.

Essential Packing List for Paris in January

The key to dress appropriately in Paris in January is to use layers. Since it can be cold and damp, you’ll want different layers to stay warm outside and that you can take off when you’re inside.

In the packing list below, you’ll find all the items you need as well as some style recommendations.

Parisians love fashion so if you want to fit in, you shouldn’t go for the overly practical outfit but choose clothes that are both practical and stylish.

Clothing

  • Warm Coat: A thick, insulated coat or a stylish wool coat is essential for keeping warm while exploring the city. Opt for a neutral color like black, grey, or camel to blend in with Parisian fashion.
  • Knit Sweaters: Pack several sweaters to layer under your coat. Chunky knits and turtlenecks are perfect for staying warm and looking chic. Since Paris can be quite windy, turtlenecks are very practical as they will protect your throat.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: Choose a few basic tops in neutral tones so you can wear them under your sweater.
  • Tank tops or bodysuits: These are perfect if you need an extra layer. If you are planning to do a museum day, you won’t need it really but if you have a day in your itinerary which includes a lot of outdoor sightseeing (like a walking tour or the Eiffel Tower), then wearing an extra layer can be handy. A tank top is quite light but adds warmth. I also love bodysuits because they are tucked into your trousers which means no cold air is going through.
  • Trousers and Jeans: Dark jeans and warm trousers are practical and fashionable for Paris in January. You will fit right in with that kind of trousers. Also, you can easily pair them with anything which means that you can create loads of different outfits.
  • Winter Dresses with Tights: A stylish winter dress paired with warm tights makes for a perfect Parisian look. Opt for thick, opaque tights to stay cozy.
  • Cardigans: French people love cardigans because they are warm, easy to take off and look quite classy. They are a great piece of clothing, especially for museum days (since they are easier to take off and can simply be opened up if you’re a bit too warm).
  • Winter skirts: You can also opt for some winter skirts paired with a knit sweater and tights.

Footwear

  • Ankle boots: Parisians love ankle boots because they are both chic and practical. You can wear them with trousers or a dress, they are waterproof and you can walk with them for a long time.
  • Knee-high boots: Another favorite in Paris since they look incredibly stylish and protect your calves. These are particularly good if you are wearing a dress or skirt with tights. Make sure you opt for flat-ish ones because there are a lot of cobblestones in Paris.
  • Sneakers: These are less popular in Paris because French girls usually don’t wear sneakers much but they are still a good option and more important, are super comfortable. Make sure you opt for a waterproof model. Sneakers like Converse or Vans are not ideal because you’ll get cold feet.

Bags

  • Crossbody Bag: A stylish and secure crossbody bag with a zip closure is practical for carrying your essentials. It’s also a good idea to keep your bag close in crowded areas.
  • Money Belt: Paris, like any major city, has pickpockets. A discreet money belt worn under your clothes can help keep your valuables safe.
  • A handbag or purse: The French  love handbags! They are kind of their statement piece so if you have a nice one, go for it!

Accessories

  • Scarf: A warm, oversized scarf is a versatile and essential winter accessory in Paris. It adds a stylish touch to any outfit and keeps you warm on windy days. Also, every French person wears one so it’s definitely the best way to add a Parisian touch to your outfit.
  • Hat: A wool beanie or beret is perfect for keeping your head warm and adding a bit of Parisian flair to your look.
  • Gloves: Insulated gloves are a must for keeping your hands warm while walking around the city. I recommend opting for touch screen ones because you will be using your phone a lot. I know they are not as pretty but in that case, practicality is worth it.
  • Umbrella: A compact umbrella is handy for the frequent rain showers Paris experiences in January.
  • Loop earplugs: These come in handy if you want to avoid the noise pollution in public transport or if it’s quite loud at night in your hotel.

Electronics

  • Phone & Charger
  • Portable Power Bank
  • Camera
  • International Adapter: France uses type C and E plugs, so be sure to bring an adapter for your electronics.
  • Earbuds: These are incredibly practical when you travel because you can listen to music (or podcasts or audiobooks, whatever you fancy!)

Paperwork

  • Passport & Visa (if needed)
  • Travel Insurance Documents
  • Hotel Reservations & Itinerary
  • Bank Card + Travel Money Card: A card with low foreign transaction fees, such as Revolut or Wise, can save you money when using ATMs or paying for things in Paris.

What to Wear in Paris in January Depending on the Weather

☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️

Wear a long-sleeve top under a knit sweater, paired with jeans and a warm coat. Add a scarf and your favorite ankle boots for a classic winter-in-Paris look.

☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️

Layer up with a tank top, long sleeve top, a cozy sweater, and a wool coat. Dark jeans or trousers and don’t forget your scarf, hat, and gloves.

🌧️ If it rains 🌧️

A waterproof or water-resistant coat (if you have one), paired with waterproof knee-high boots. Bring a compact umbrella, hat and scarf.

❄️ If it snows ❄️

Bundle up in a warm coat, layers, and insulated boots. A wool beanie, scarf, and gloves will keep the chill at bay.

Things Not to Wear in Paris in January

  • Heels: Walking in heels on potentially icy or wet streets is difficult and uncomfortable. Save them for indoor events or dinners or simply leave them at home.
  • Lightweight Shoes: Thin, non-waterproof shoes will leave your feet cold and wet. Stick to waterproof or insulated footwear.
  • Overly Casual Clothes: Parisians tend to dress stylishly, even in the winter. Avoid overly casual outfits like sweatpants unless you’re just relaxing at the hotel.

Insider Tip: Parisian Style in January

Parisians are known for their effortlessly chic style, even in winter.

Stick to neutral colors like black, grey, navy, and beige, and focus on quality pieces. In France, less is more!

Layering is key, and a well-chosen accessory like a scarf or hat can make your outfit feel polished.
