London is one of the most popular cities in Europe and it’s a great destination all year round. I’ve been living in the UK since 2016 and if there is one thing that people ask me all the time is when is the best time to visit London.

This is a tough question because yes, we technically have seasons and some months like May or June tend to be the best in terms of weather.

But the reality of things is, we get pretty bad weather all year round (I’m from South of France so that gives you a frame of reference). On top of that, it’s quite unreliable which means that it’s almost impossible to say if you will have good weather or not. You could get just as lucky in winter as in Spring.

For this reason, I always thought that even January was a good month to visit. It’s a lot less crowded with tourists and if you are lucky, you will be enjoying some sunshine.

The only downside is that the days are pretty short in January so it’s dark quite early. Having said that, there are so many indoor activities you can do in London that it’s never really an issue.

Now, I know you came here to know what you should be wearing in London in January and that’s exactly what were are going to talk about now.

What is the Weather Like in London in January?

london in january

London in January is cold and often wet, with temperatures ranging from 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Rain is quite frequent, so waterproof clothing is a must.

While you’re unlikely to encounter heavy snow, there may be occasional frosty mornings, and the short daylight hours mean it can feel colder, especially in the evenings.

Despite the chilly weather, January is a great time to visit London. The city’s indoor attractions like museums, galleries, and cozy pubs make for a great escape from the cold. And if you’re lucky, you may catch a crisp, clear winter day that’s perfect for a walk around Hyde Park or along the Thames.

Essential Packing List for London in January

Here’s your ultimate packing list to stay warm, dry, and stylish during your trip to London in January.

Please note that you should always adapt the packing list to your own style. London is not like Paris or Rome where locals have a very specific fashion style you should try to match. You can wear whatever you want in London so don’t hesitate.

Clothing

  • Warm, Waterproof Coat: A well-insulated, waterproof coat is essential for January in London. I honestly recommend a winter rain coat or parka with a hood but you could also opt for a wool coat with a water-resistant layer. This is your most important piece of clothing because you’ll spend a lot of time outside and it is both cold and rainy. A hood is incredibly practical as well because it protects you from the rain.

PRO TIP: Make sure to get a coat that you can easily take off because it can be very cold in some of the tube carriages (especially the older lines) so you can go from very cold to very hot and back to cold very quickly in London’s public transport.

  • Knit Sweaters: These are the best to keep you warm since they are made of wool and they look quite stylish. You could also opt for fleeces but knit sweaters are better in terms of fashion.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: Great for layering under sweaters or wearing alone indoors.
  • Tank tops: I usually wear a tank top underneath my long sleeve t-shirt for extra warmth. Bodysuits are also great because they are tucked in and keep you extra warm.
  • Turtlenecks: London in January is windy so turtlenecks will protect your neck.
  • Jeans & Trousers: Jeans, wool or velvet trousers are perfect for the season. They’re comfortable, warm, and versatile. Also, you can wear them with anything.
  • Knit dresses with tights: If you are more of a dress person, you definitely can in London as well. Just make sure you are wearing a thick dress with thick tights. I also recommend wearing a tank top or bodysuit underneath. Dresses look a bit more stylish so they are great in the evening or for a museum day.
  • Winter skirts: you can also opt for a thick skirt with tights and a turtleneck or knit sweater.

Footwear

  • Waterproof Knee High Boots: There are two things to bear in mind, it will be wet (most likely) and cold and you will be walking a lot so I recommend taking a pair of leather knee high boots. Those will keep you warm and if they are flat, you should be able to walk for a long time.
  • Comfortable Waterproof Sneakers
  • Timberland or platform ankle boots: These are quite sturdy boots and great for winter. Also, you can wear them with anything so it’s always practical.

Bags

  • Hand bag, stylish backpack or Crossbody Bag to carry your belongings around during the day

Accessories

  • Umbrella: A compact, windproof umbrella is a lifesaver in London. Expect rain, so you’ll want to be prepared!
  • Scarf: A thick, woollen scarf is a must for keeping warm on windy days.
  • Tights: If you’re packing dresses or skirts
  • Hat & Gloves: Woollen gloves and a cozy hat (like a beanie or stylish beret) will help keep you warm during chilly mornings and evenings.
  • Earmuffs or Headband: Optional, but handy for those especially cold, windy days.

Electronics

Paperwork

  • Passport & Copies: Always carry your passport and keep a photocopy in a separate place as a precaution.
  • Travel Insurance
  • Hotel Reservations
  • Credit/Bank Cards: Contactless payment is widely accepted in London and you will need it to take public transport so it’s worth getting a Revolut card if you don’t have one yet.

What to Wear in London in January Depending on the Weather:

☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️
It will still be cold, so layer up! Wear a bodysuit, winter dress, tights and waterproof ankle boots as well as a waterproof coat and scarf.

☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️
Opt for jeans, long sleeve top, sweater, along with a warm waterproof coat and scarf. Add gloves and a hat if it’s particularly chilly.

🌧️ If it rains 🌧️
A waterproof coat or insulated jacket is a must. Pair it with water-resistant boots and warm layers underneath. Don’t forget your umbrella!

Things Not to Wear in London in January:

  • Light, Non-Waterproof Shoes: With frequent rain and wet streets, avoid shoes that aren’t waterproof, like canvas sneakers or non-treated leather.
  • Heels: London’s streets, especially in tourist areas, are uneven and often slippery in the rain. Stick with flats or boots for comfort. The only exception to that is if you are planning some night outs and want to take a taxi instead of public transport.
  • Shorts & Summer Dresses: January is far too cold for these. Pack warmer, more practical clothing.
  • Thin Jackets: A light jacket won’t be enough in London’s January chill. Opt for something with insulation.
