Heading to Japan soon? Yaaay! How exciting! Tokyo is one of the most fascinating cities in the world and there is so much to do.
Now, if you are visiting in December and are wondering what to wear, this article is for you.
If I’m honest, December is one of the most difficult months to pack for because it truly marks the change from autumn to winter.
In A Rush? Here are My Top Picks
This means that if you are visiting early December, you should be wearing autumn clothes whereas you will need full on winter clothes at the end of the month.
GOOD TO KNOW: The other important thing to know about the change of season in Japan is that it usually happens from one day to another which means that you could very well have mild autumnal weather and the day after switch to complete winter for the rest of the trip.
This is important to bear in mind because you’ll need to slightly adapt your outfits.
In this guide, I’ll help you pack smart for your Tokyo adventure, including essential items to stay warm, comfortable, and stylish while blending in with the locals.
What is the Weather Like in Tokyo in December?

December marks the start of winter in Tokyo, with temperatures ranging between 4°C and 12°C (39°F to 54°F).
While it’s not freezing, the weather can feel quite cool, especially in the evenings. It’s generally dry in December, with sunny days being common, but it’s important to be prepared for chilly winds and cooler nights.
Essential Packing List for Tokyo in December
You can find below a packing list with all the essential items you’ll need in Tokyo in December.
Clothing
- A Coat: If you are visiting at the beginning of December, I’d recommend a medium-weight black wool coat. It doesn’t need to be too warm but still a winter coat. For the end of december, you should definitely opt for a thicker and insulated coat.
This is exactly the kind of coat we wear in winter (with a scarf of course!).
- Knit Sweaters: Bring several knit sweaters for layering. Japanese fashion tends to favor neutral or muted colors, so opt for classic shades like black, grey, or beige.
Ideal for winter trip. Opt for a neutral colour so you can pair it with anything.
- Long-Sleeve Tops: Perfect for layering under sweaters or wearing alone during the day when it’s slightly warmer.
- T-shirt: The temperatures at the beginning of the month are quite mild so a t-shirt with a jumper is enough (with your coat of course). If you are planning to move a lot and go cycling for example, they will be better than long sleeves.
- Roll neck tops: These can also come in handy on mild days since they are warmer than a long-sleeve t-shirt meaning you don’t have to wear a sweater with them, a cardigan will be enough.
- Thermal Layers: Thin thermal tops and leggings are great for layering under your outfits on colder days and evenings. These come in very handy at the end of december but not necessary at the beginning of the month.
- Trousers and Jeans: December is the last month when you can get away with jeans as it becomes too cold in January and February. You might find them a bit less comfortable towards the end of the month but you can still wear them all month long. Warm trousers such as velvet ones are also ideal for the month of December. Just make sure you don’t opt for thin fabric.
- Winter Shorts with Tights: These can be very handy in Tokyo because they are comfortable to walk in and look so stylish. Just make sure you opt for winter shorts and not flowy summer ones.
- Cardigans or Blazers: These are great layering pieces since you can wear them under your coat and are great top layers indoors.
Footwear
- Comfortable Walking Shoes: Tokyo is a city best explored on foot, so bring comfortable walking sneakers. You don’t need hiking boots for Tokyo itself (though depending on the day trips you’re planning you might need them) but you need sneakers that you can walk in for a long time.
These are perfect in November because they are waterproof and they have a thick sole which is very comfortable when you're walking for a long time.
- Ankle Boots: these are ideal if you want to be a bit more stylish. Opt for flat Chelsea boots, that way you can wear them with tights or trousers.
These cute boots are ideal because you can walk for a long time and they are so pretty.
- Timberland Boots: I absolutely loved my Timberland in Tokyo in winter because they are very comfy and have a thick sole which means that your feet don’t hurt as much at the end of the day.
I absolutely loved my Timberlands when I visited Tokyo and I think they are the best kind of shoes you can get. Also, you can wear them with anything!
Pro Tip: Most tourists walk at least 20,000 steps per day in Tokyo (yes, that much) so you will be walking a lot! You don’t want to have to do that in uncomfortable shoes. Also, if you get blisters, that can seriously make your trip difficult so make sure you are wearing comfortable shoes.
Accessories
- Scarf: A warm scarf is not only practical for keeping out the cold but also adds a stylish touch to your outfit.
- Hat or Beanie: A beanie or hat will keep your head warm and add a fashionable element to your winter look.
- Gloves: You probably won’t use them at the beginning of December but they definitely are handy at the end of the month.
Electronics
- Phone & Charger
- Portable Power Bank: You will be using your phone all the time in Tokyo (mainly for public transport) so it’s very important to have a power bank with you.
- Camera
- International Adapter: Japan uses type A and B plugs so you can get a specific adapter or an international one that you can reuse.
This travel adapter for Japan works for devices from the US, Canada, the UK and more.
Paperwork
- Passport & Visa
- Travel Insurance Documents
- Hotel Reservations & Itinerary
- Public Transportation Card: Tokyo’s public transportation system is efficient and easy to use. You can purchase a Suica or Pasmo card, which makes it convenient to travel on trains and buses.
- Credit/Debit Cards + Cash: While most places in Tokyo accept credit cards, having some cash on hand for smaller shops and street food is helpful.
What to Wear in Tokyo in December Depending on the Weather
☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️
A long-sleeve top under a medium-weight knit sweater, paired with jeans or trousers, and a wool coat will keep you comfortable on a sunny winter day.
☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️
Layer up with a cozy sweater, thermal top, and a warm coat. Dark jeans or trousers are a great combination for chilly, overcast days. Don’t forget your scarf, gloves, and hat.
🌧️ If it rains 🌧️
A coat and waterproof ankle boots are perfect for rainy days. Rain is not that common in December in Tokyo but it’s always a possibility so if you have a travel umbrella, that’s perfect.
Things Not to Wear in Tokyo in December
- Summer dresses: It’s far too cold for shorts in December, even on the warmest days.
- Overly Casual Clothes: While Tokyo is relatively casual, locals still tend to dress neatly. Avoid overly casual outfits like sweatpants or athletic wear unless you’re headed to the gym.
