Visiting New York City is always a magical experience. It’s one of the best cities in the world and there is so much you can do! But it’s true that it can be difficult to plan your outfits and know what to wear, especially in winter.
January in NYC is cold and often snowy, but it’s also a magical time to experience the city’s winter charm.
With fewer tourists and the holiday season winding down, you’ll enjoy a quieter (and often cheaper) version of the city. Iconic sights like Central Park turn into snowy wonderlands, and seasonal activities like ice skating at Rockefeller Center are in full swing.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to pack to stay warm and comfortable while exploring New York City in January.
What is the Weather Like in NYC in January?
NYC in January is generally very cold, with temperatures ranging from -3°C to 5°C (27°F to 41°F).
Snowfall is common, and there are frequent windy days, which can make the air feel even chillier.
The city can experience both clear, crisp days and damp, cloudy ones, so layers and warm, waterproof outerwear will be key.
Despite the weather, January is a great time to explore NYC’s indoor attractions like museums, theaters, and cozy cafes, and if you’re dressed right, you’ll be ready to explore outside as well.
Essential Packing List for NYC in January
You can find below my packing list for NYC in January. Please note that packing lists are very personal and that’s something you should adapt to your own style.
Clothing
- Insulated Winter Coat: A thick, waterproof, and windproof coat is essential. Down coats or puffer jackets are ideal for keeping warm on NYC’s coldest days. For a more stylish option, you can also opt for a thick wool coat or even a faux-fur layered one (just make sure you’re also packing an umbrella thought since those are not as waterproof).
- Knit Sweaters: Bring a few warm, cozy sweaters for layering. Neutral or darker colors are easier to pair so I highly recommend those. I particularly liked the oversized ones because you can add more layers underneath if needed and wear it on your shoulder if you’re going for dinner.
- Long-Sleeve Tops: Great for layering under sweaters or cardigans.
- Thermal Tops: If you feel the cold easily, consider packing thermal tops to wear as a base layer. This can be a thermal material or just a simple tank top or bodysuit which will add another layer.
- Thermal Leggings or Tights: I find the thermal tights particularly practical if you’re wearing wide pants because they keep you warm and nobody sees them.
- Jeans and Warm Pants: Opt for thicker fabrics such as wool or velvet. Alternatively, you can opt for jeans or any other fabric and layer them over tights.
- Warm Dresses with Tights: If you prefer dresses, you can definitely wear winter dresses (knit dresses or multi layered ones) with thermal or thick tights.
- Winter skirts with tights: Skirts are also an option. Opt for winter ones in velvet or thick fabric. You can easily pair them with a knit sweater, making two outfits out of the same tops.
- Cardigans: They are both warm and stylish which is ideal for evening outings.
- Fleeces: I know this is not the most stylish piece of clothing, however it can come in very handy if you are planning on spending some days outside mainly (for example if you’re going to Central Park or the Statue of Liberty).
Shoes
- Ankle Boots: Ankle boots are ideal because they are stylish, go with any outfit and you can walk for a long time (providing they are flat). Try to get some with a thick sole and non-slippy ones since there is always a chance of snow in NYC in January.
- Knee High Boots: These are also ideal if you want some stylish shoes that will keep you warm.
- Comfortable Sneakers: Opt for warm and waterproof ones since there could be snow.
Accessories
- Warm Socks: These will keep your feet warm and dry. Wool or fleece-lined socks are great options.
- Gloves: Insulated gloves are a must-have for keeping your hands warm, especially with frequent photo-taking! Opt for touch screen ones so you don’t have to take them off all the time.
- Beanie or Warm Hat: This is the best way to stay warm in NYC since most of the body heat leaves through the head. It will also
- Scarf: A large scarf or pashmina adds warmth and style. It also protects you from the wind.
- Small Umbrella: Rain or snow showers are common, so a compact umbrella is handy.
Electronics
- Phone & Charger
- Power Bank
- Camera
- International Adapter: For non-US travelers, the US use types A and B outlets so make sure to pack a travel adapter.
Paperwork
- ID
- Travel Insurance Documents
- Hotel Reservation & Itinerary
What to Wear in NYC in January Depending on the Weather
☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️
Wear a thermal top, a cozy sweater, and an insulated coat with jeans and waterproof ankle boots. Add a scarf, gloves, and a hat for warmth.
☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️
A sweater layered under your winter coat with warm trousers or jeans and fleece-lined socks should keep you comfortable. Don’t forget gloves and a beanie to stay cozy!
❄️ If it’s snowy ❄️
Go for a warm (and if possible waterproof) coat, a thick sweater, thermal tights, pants, and insulated, non-slip boots.
An umbrella can help shield you from snowfall, and thermal accessories like a scarf, hat, and gloves will keep you extra warm.
Things Not to Wear in NYC in January
- Thin Jackets: The NYC winter is too cold for light layers. A thick coat is essential.
- Non-Waterproof Shoes: Snow and slush can soak through regular shoes, leaving your feet cold and wet.
- Shorts or Thin Tights: January is far too cold for summer attire or thin layers.
- Heels: With icy sidewalks, heels are impractical. Stick with flat, sturdy shoes or boots. If you want some more stylish options, then opt for thick heeled boots.
