Planning a trip to Marrakech in December? Excellent choice! I know that most people don’t necessarily think about going to Marrakech in December because it’s not particularly Christmassy but I actually find it to be one of the best times!

While December is winter in Morocco, Marrakech remains relatively mild, making it a great time to explore the souks, stunning palaces, and head to the desert without having to deal with the heat of summer.

It’s also an excellent place to escape the cold of winter however, temperatures can fluctuate significantly between day and night, so packing the right mix of layers is key.

I visited Marrakech several times in December and always loved it. It can be a bit tricky to pack the right outfits because you need both summer and winter clothes (I know, that’s annoying) but don’t worry, in this article I’ll tell you everything you need to know.

What is the Weather Like in Marrakech in December?

marrkech in december

December in Marrakech offers pleasant daytime temperatures, averaging between 10°C and 20°C (50°F to 68°F), but it can get quite chilly in the mornings and evenings, with lows around 6°C (43°F).

There is loads of sunshine during the day, so it feels warm which means you might just be in a t-shirt during the day.

Mornings and evenings are definitely chilly though and you’ll need an autumn coat or jacket.

Rain is not frequent but it’s always possible. As a general thing, it’s not something you should overly prepare for though.

Essential Packing List for Marrakech in December

As you might have gathered already, you’ll need layers in Marrakech in December because you will start the day quite covered up and will take these layers off throughout the day.

You will find below the packing list I recommend. Please bear in mind that this is both to be both practical and respectful of the local culture.

As a general thing, you don’t need to be too covered up in Morocco but you should still prioritise long sleeves and covered shoulders.

Clothing

morocco in december
  • Light to Medium Jacket: A versatile jacket is a must for mornings and evenings when the temperatures drop. A light to medium, insulated jacket should be enough. I personally usually take a light puff jacket because it doesn’t take much space and keeps you warm enough.
  • Layerable Sweaters or Cardigans: Pack a few lightweight sweaters or cardigans that you can easily take off as the day warms up. Wool or cotton-blend sweaters are great options for layering.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: Perfect for layering under a sweater or jacket during cooler parts of the day. You’ll want breathable fabrics like cotton or linen for the warmer afternoons.
  • T-shirts or Lightweight Tops: Marrakech can still be warm during the day, so a couple of short-sleeve tops are useful.
  • Comfortable Trousers or Jeans: Loose-fitting, breathable trousers are ideal for exploring the city and respecting local customs. Jeans or cotton trousers are also good choices.
  • Maxi Skirts or Dresses: If you prefer dresses or skirts, opt for a maxi length to stay comfortable and modest. Pair with tights or leggings if it’s cooler in the evening.
  • Thermal Layers (Optional): If you are planning on going to the desert, then some thermal layers could be useful as the nights are very cold there.

PRO TIP: I don’t recommend wearing any white trousers or tops in Marrakech because it’s quite dusty and they will get dirty. Opt for darker colors if you can.

Footwear

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: You’ll be doing plenty of walking around Marrakech’s medina and narrow alleyways, so comfortable shoes are a must. Opt for sneakers or sturdy flats that are easy to walk in for hours.

PRO TIP: These don’t have to be waterproof so they can have fabric but once again, avoid white. I took my white Converses to Marrakech the first time round and it wasn’t the greatest of ideas.

  • Ankle Boots or Loafers: For a slightly dressier option that’s still comfortable, ankle boots or loafers are perfect.

Bags

  • Money belt: Pickpockets are definitely an issue in Marrakech so I highly recommend getting a money belt. It’s such a small price to pay for the peace of mind and convenience it will provide. You can wear it under your clothes so it’s not visible and extra safe.
  • Crossbody Bag or Backpack: A small crossbody bag or daypack is great for carrying your essentials. Make sure it’s secure with zippers, as crowded areas can attract pickpockets.
  • Tote Bag: A reusable tote bag is handy for carrying purchases from the souks or bringing an extra layer as temperatures shift throughout the day.

Accessories

  • Pashmina or Scarf: A large scarf is one of the most versatile items you can pack. It can be used for warmth in the evenings, covering your shoulders when visiting sites, or as a headscarf to shield against the sun.
  • Sunglasses

Electronics

Paperwork

  • Passport & Visa (if required): Ensure your passport is valid and check visa requirements based on your nationality.
  • Travel Insurance: It’s always wise to have travel insurance, no matter what your plans are.
  • Hotel Reservations & Itinerary
  • Bank Card & Cash: Morocco is largely a cash economy, especially in the souks, so carry some Moroccan dirhams. Cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants, but it’s a good idea to have cash on hand for most purchases and tips. I highly recommend getting a Revolut or Wise card since they work out a lot cheaper when you exchange currencies.

What to Wear in Marrakech in December Depending on the Weather

☀️ If It’s Sunny
On a sunny afternoon, wear a light long-sleeve top or T-shirt, paired with loose trousers or a maxi skirt. A light jacket or sweater is handy for when the sun begins to set. Don’t forget your sunglasses!

☁️ If It’s Cloudy
Layer up with a sweater over a long-sleeve top, and add a light jacket. Comfortable trousers or jeans with ankle boots will keep you warm as the day cools down. A scarf can be an extra layer of warmth or to dress up your outfit.

Things Not to Wear in Marrakech in December

  • Shorts or Revealing Clothing: While Marrakech is accustomed to tourists, it’s respectful to dress modestly. Try to avoid shorts, sleeveless tops, or short skirts. Technically, you are allowed but you will probably get more attention that you’d like.
  • High Heels: The uneven streets of Marrakech and its souks are not ideal for high heels. Stick to flat, comfortable shoes for walking.
  • Heavy Winter Coats: Unless you’re heading to the Atlas Mountains, you won’t need a heavy winter coat in Marrakech. Stick to lighter layers for warmth.

I hope this article was helpful and that you now have a better idea of how to dress in Marrakech in December.
