Located at the very end of the beautiful Florida Keys, Key West is one of the most famous small towns in the United States and an excellent place to visit in December if you’d like to get some winter sun.
You’ll be able to enjoy activities like beach days, water sports, and exploring the cute streets, without worrying about freezing temperatures.
But I know that it can be hard to pack for tropical destinations in winter because we don’t really know what to expect and it’s hard to picture ourselves in a bikini when we are wrapped up in a big winter coat.
So, don’t you worry! In this article, I tell you everything you need to know about visiting Key West in December and what you should be packing.
What is the Weather Like in Key West in December?
Key West is blessed with warm, tropical weather year-round, and December is no exception.
Of course, this is still one of the ‘coldest’ months in Florida but it’s also one of the most comfortable because it’s dry and the temperatures are still warm.
Daytime temperatures average between 20°C and 26°C (68°F to 79°F), making it perfect for water activities.
Evenings can cool down to around 18°C (65°F), but it’s rarely cold. You won’t need to worry about snow or anything of the kind, but occasional light rain or breezy conditions are possible.
Essential Packing List for Key West in December
Since Key West in December feels more like a mild summer day, lightweight, breathable clothing is your best bet, with a few layers for cooler evenings.
You will find below my recommended packing list but as usual, you need to make it yours and adapt it to your style.
Clothing
- Swimwear: The very first thing you should be packing is swimwear because you will be using it a lot. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, snorkeling, kayaking or hitting the beach, pack at least two swimsuits. Many resorts and hotels have pools, and there are loads of water activities you can do in the Florida Keys.
- Lightweight Dresses or Cover-Ups: Flowy sundresses, maxi dresses, or beach cover-ups are perfect for transitioning from beach to town. These also double as casual outfits for exploring the island.
- Dresses: You will also need dresses for daytime and nighttime activities. While I recommend a flowy one if you’re doing any water activities (because it’s more practical), you can opt for any kind of summer dress for the rest, including tighter ones.
- Shorts & Skirts: Breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are ideal for skirts and shorts. Shorts are particularly practical if you’re planning on exploring Key West by bike.
- T-shirts & Tank Tops: Comfortable t-shirts and tank tops are a must for daytime activities. Opt for light, moisture-wicking fabrics that keep you comfortable in the sun.
- Jumpsuits: I love jumpsuits because they give you that classy style while being very practical. You only need to pack one item and it acts as a full outfit which is very practical. For the day, I recommend short ones and you can opt for a trouser jumpsuit for the evening.
- Light Sweater or Jacket: While it stays warm during the day, the evenings can get a bit cooler in December, especially if you’re near the water. A light sweater or a casual jacket such as a denim one will come in handy for cooler nights.
- Casual Pants or Jeans: For the evenings or if it gets breezy, bring a pair of lightweight jeans or casual trousers. This is also useful if you plan to dine out or do something more formal in the evening.
Footwear
- Comfortable Sandals: Sandals are a must for Key West. Opt for a pair of comfortable sandals that you can wear both to the beach and while walking around the island.
- Flip-Flops: Perfect for beach days and lounging by the pool, flip-flops are a Key West essential.
- Water Shoes (Optional): If you plan to go snorkeling, kayaking, or boating, water shoes can come in handy to protect your feet when wading in shallow waters or exploring coral reefs.
- Casual Sneakers or Flats: For more walking-intensive activities like sightseeing or biking around the island, pack a comfortable pair of sneakers or casual flats. Something like Converses or Vans would be ideal.
Bags
- Beach Bag or Tote: A spacious beach bag is useful for carrying your sunscreen, towels, and snacks for a day at the beach or by the pool.
- Crossbody Bag or Small Backpack: A small, lightweight crossbody bag or backpack is perfect for carrying your essentials (wallet, phone, sunscreen).
Accessories
- Sunglasses: With sunny skies almost guaranteed in December, sunglasses are an absolute must to protect your eyes from the Florida sun.
- Wide-Brimmed Hat: A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap will help shield your face from the sun, especially if you plan to spend lots of time outdoors.
- Sunscreen: Key West’s sun can be strong, even in December, so pack a high-SPF sunscreen and reapply it often, especially if you’re at the beach or on the water.
- Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated during your trip by carrying a reusable water bottle with you. With warm temperatures, it’s important to drink plenty of water.
- Beach Poncho: This is my favorite accessory for a tropical vacation because it’s so practical. You can use it to change and put your bikini on as well as after swimming instead of a cover up.
- Microfiber towel: A beach towel is obviously a must have but if you can, opt for a large microfiber one because they dry so quickly. It’s very practical.
- Snorkeling Gear (Optional): While most tours will provide snorkeling gear, I always find it to be a very convenient thing to have. It’s a very cheap piece of equipment to get and that way, if you go to other beaches in the Keys, you can always go for a snorkel without having to hire a mask and snorkel.
Electronics
- Phone & Charger
- Portable Power Bank
- GoPro: With so many water activities available, having a GoPro will come in very handy if you’d like to take photos while snorkeling or kayaking.
- Waterproof phone pouch: Again, a very practical accessory if you’re going kayaking and wish to take your phone to take photos.
Paperwork
- Passport & Visa (if required)
- Travel Insurance
- Hotel Reservations & Itinerary
- Bank Card & Cash
What to Wear in Key West in December Depending on the Weather
☀️ If It’s Sunny
During warm, sunny days, wear a swimsuit under a sundress or cover-up. Pair it with comfortable sandals and a sun hat. Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen!
🌦️ If It’s Cloudy or Rainy
If rain is in the forecast, opt for a light rain jacket or poncho. Wear quick-dry shorts and a t-shirt with sneakers or waterproof sandals. A small umbrella is also useful for quick showers.
🌬️ If It’s Cool in the Evening
For cooler evenings, layer a light sweater or jacket over your dress or top and shorts. Casual jeans or pants are also great for a night out at one of Key West’s outdoor bars or restaurants.
Things Not to Wear in Key West in December
- Heavy Winter Clothes: Leave your heavy winter coats at home! December in Key West feels more like spring or summer, so you’ll want to stick to lightweight clothing.
- High Heels: Key West has a laid-back vibe, and you’ll likely be walking on sand or uneven streets, so high heels aren’t practical. Stick to comfortable sandals or flats.
- Bulky Layers: Since it rarely gets cold in Key West, bulky sweaters or coats will just take up space in your suitcase.
With this guide, you’ll be well-prepared for a relaxing and sunny trip to Key West in December. Enjoy the warm weather, stunning sunsets, and tropical vibes!
