Planning a trip to Scotland in December? Get ready for a magical experience!

While it’s true that the weather can be cold and unpredictable, Scotland’s beautiful winter landscapes, festive Christmas markets, and castles more than make up for it.

This is one of my favourite times to explore Scotland, especially Edinburgh, because it’s so magical and the Christmas spirit is all around. Also, Edinburgh is one of the best places in the world to spend New Year’s Eve so you will definitely love it!

In that having been said, you need to be well prepared and pack for the weather because it’s cold and rainy at that time of the year.

Layering is key to staying comfortable, and waterproof gear is a must. In this guide, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about Scotland in December and what you should be wearing.

What is the Weather Like in Scotland in December?

scotland in december

Scotland’s December weather is typically cold, with short daylight hours.

Since Scotland is in the UK, we don’t always realise it’s quite far north but it is, which is why the days are short and it is cold. That said, it’s not like the Scandinavian countries either.

You’ll need to be prepared for rain, wind, and possibly snow. Here’s what to expect:

  • Temperature: Daytime highs range from 3°C to 7°C (37°F to 45°F), while nighttime lows can drop to around 0°C or below (32°F or lower).
  • Rain and Snow: Scotland experiences a fair amount of rain in December, especially in coastal areas. Snow is more common in the Highlands, but it can happen anywhere.
  • Daylight: The sun sets early in December, with daylight lasting around 6-7 hours, so plan your activities accordingly.

Essential Packing List for Scotland in December

Since the weather can vary, layering is key. You’ll want to pack clothing that keeps you warm and dry, as well as comfortable footwear for exploring. Here is what you’ll need.

Clothing

  • Warm, Waterproof Winter Coat: A high-quality, insulated coat is essential for staying warm outdoors. Choose one that’s waterproof and windproof, as Scotland’s December weather can be rainy and windy. I particularly recommend one that is fleece lined because it will keep you warmer. You also need one with a hood because that will protect you from the cold and rain.
  • Thermal Layers: Thermal tops and leggings are great for layering under your clothes. They provide extra warmth without adding bulk. This can be thermal leggings, merino wool t-shirts…
  • Wool or Fleece Sweaters: Pack a few cozy sweaters, preferably made of wool or fleece, to layer over your base layers. They are both great fabrics but wool jumpers are more stylish than fleece sweaters so that’s down to what you prefer. I have a couple of turtleneck fleece sweaters that are amazing for Scotland in winter.
  • Christmas jumper: If you have a Christmas jumper, it’s the perfect occasion to take it since it’s Christmas time and we quite like Christmas jumpers in the UK. If you don’t have one, then you can simply head to Primark in Edinburgh or Glasgow. There are always loads of cheap ones there.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: Bring a few long-sleeve shirts or turtlenecks to wear under your sweaters. Opt for breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics like cotton or merino wool because they will keep you a lot warmer.
  • Waterproof Trousers or Jeans: Jeans are great if you are in Edinburgh or Glasgow but consider packing waterproof trousers if you’re planning outdoor activities like hiking. The other option is to wear fleece lined leggings for warmth and waterproof trousers on top in case of rain.
  • Fleece Lined Leggings: These are my favourite type of trousers for Scotland in winter because they keep you so so warm. Also, Scotland is quite relaxed in terms of fashion style so wearing leggings is no issue at all.
  • Bodysuit: They make for the perfect first layer because they are tucked in and therefore there is no cold air touching you.
  • Waterproof Poncho: This is particularly handy when you go to the highlands since it would rain a lot and even if you have a waterproof coat, at least that will keep you completely dry. In Edinburgh or Glasgow, it’s less necessary because there are loads of places where you can stay inside but ultimately it’s always a good thing to have.
  • Winter dress with tights: While it’s true that it’s cold and rainy, it doesn’t mean you can’t be stylish in Scotland in December. If you are staying in Edinburgh or another city or town, you can also wear a warm dress with thick tights, especially in the evening if you want to look a bit more stylish.

Footwear

  • Waterproof Boots: Sturdy, waterproof boots are a must for Scotland in December. Choose insulated boots with good traction to keep your feet warm and dry on rainy or snowy days. Ankle boots are great for city exploring, while hiking boots are ideal for outdoor adventures. I also particularly recommend Timberland boots because they are stylish and are sturdy boots.
  • Thick Wool Socks: Pack thick, warm socks—preferably wool—to keep your feet cozy. Wool is great because it wicks away moisture and retains warmth even if your feet get wet.
  • Knee high boots: these are great when you are visiting a city because they keep your calves warm. Make sure they are flat because there are a lot of cobblestones in Scotland.

Bags

  • Crossbody Bag or Backpack: A small, water-resistant crossbody bag or backpack is perfect for carrying your essentials while exploring.
  • Daypack for Outdoor Activities: If you’re hiking or spending time in the Highlands, a lightweight, waterproof daypack will come in handy for carrying extra layers, snacks, and water.

Accessories

  • Umbrella
  • Reusable Water Bottle: You can drink water from the tap in Scotland so having a reusable water bottle is very convenient. I also recommend getting a thermal one so you can carry hot water and make yourself a tea or coffee on the go. Having a hot drink will warm up your hands.
  • Scarves: A warm wool scarf is a must for winter in Scotland. It not only keeps you cozy but also adds a stylish touch to your outfit. Try to get a wide one so you can wrap it around your head if it’s cold.
  • Gloves: Insulated, waterproof gloves are essential for keeping your hands warm. You can go for a very warm one but I usually recommend touch screen ones because they are practical. You’ll be using your phone a lot and
  • Hats: A warm, woolen hat or beanie will keep your head warm and protect you from the wind. Choose one that covers your ears for extra warmth.

Electronics

Paperwork

  • Passport & Visa (if required)
  • Travel Insurance
  • Bank Card & Cash: Most places in Scotland accept cards, but it’s always good to have some cash (British pounds) for small purchases, especially in rural areas. If you want to save money on currency exchange, I particularly recommend getting a Revolut or Wise card.

What to Wear in Scotland in December Depending on the Activity

🏰 Exploring Edinburgh and Glasgow

For exploring cities like Edinburgh or Glasgow, wear fleece lined leggings, a cozy sweater, and a warm, waterproof coat. Comfortable waterproof boots like Timberlands are a must, as you’ll likely be walking a lot. Don’t forget a scarf, hat, and gloves to protect yourself from the wind.

🏔️ Hiking or Outdoor Adventures (Highlands, Isle of Skye)

If you’re heading to the Scottish Highlands or planning a hike, layer up with thermal clothing, a fleece sweater, and waterproof trousers. A waterproof, insulated jacket and hiking boots with good traction are essential for staying dry and warm. Bring a daypack with extra layers and snacks.

🎄 Evening Out (Gigs, Pubs)

For a cozy evening in a pub or attending a winter festival, opt for a warm sweater, dark jeans, and ankle boots. A warm coat, scarf, and gloves will keep you warm when moving between venues.

☔ Rainy Days

If you encounter a rainy day (which is likely!), wear your waterproof boots, a waterproof coat, and bring a compact umbrella. Layer with a sweater and thermal base layers to stay warm in the damp weather.

Things Not to Wear in Scotland in December

  • Thin Fabrics: Avoid lightweight clothing like summer fabrics or thin jackets. Scotland’s December weather requires warm, thick layers to stay comfortable.
  • Uncomfortable Shoes: With Scotland’s cobblestone streets, uneven terrain, and wet weather, leave behind high heels or shoes with poor traction. Opt for comfortable, waterproof footwear instead.

Now you’re all ready to go to Scotland this december! Have fun!
