What is the weather like in Rome in September
September is an excellent time of the year to visit Rome because it’s still warm but nowhere as hot as in July or August and you get to enjoy the eternal city without the crowds.
On average, temperatures are between 15°C and 27°C (59°C and 81°C) with 5 days of rain (which makes it one of the driest months of the year).
All in all, the weather is usually very good which makes it easier to pack.
Essential Packing List for Rome in September
Bags
- 1 luggage or travel backpack: depending on the length of the trip this can be a hold luggage or a carry on.
- 1 hand bag for the day or stylish backpack
- 1 money belt – although I agree this is not a very stylish item, it comes in very handy and you can keep it under your t-shirt which will reduce the risk of being pickpocketed.
Clothes
- Dresses – any kind of dress will work but I recommend flowy ones. It can get quite hot during the day and tight dresses could be uncomfortable. I also would pick midi dresses rather than long ones because it’s easier to walk. As a general rule, don’t wear dresses that are too short since it’s not really the Italian style and it could be an issue to enter certain churches, especially St Peter Basilica
- T-shirts or shirts with short sleeves. Pack a few casual T-shirts (basics like black or white work best) but also flowy shirts. It’s better to take short sleeves since it will be warm. Crop tops are also acceptable if worn with high waist skirts or trousers. Again, it’s better not to show too much of the belly to enter the churches.
- Shorts or skirts. It’s completely acceptable and very practical to wear shorts in Rome but bear in mind that it could be an issue to enter certain religious sites so if you are planning to visit the Vatican, keep the shorts for another day.. For the skirts, make sure you take something comfortable and practical. Walking all day in a pencil skirt won’t be comfortable.
- Light trousers. If you are visiting at the beginning of September, you probably won’t wear them during the day but they will come in handy in the evening. Late september, they will also be useful during the day.
- 1 pair of jeans. Don’t take more than one because you won’t be wearing them much but they can come in handy in the evening when temperatures are lower and if you have a rainy day.
- Cardigans or light jumpers. These will be very useful in the evening.
- Light jacket for the evening. A jean jacket is also a good option.
- Leggings for the plane journey. Leggings are one of the best things to wear on the plane since they are very comfortable.
- Underwear / Bras
- Socks
- Pyjamas
Shoes
- Comfortable sneakers. Converses or vans are perfectly acceptable but sneakers with a ticker sole would be ideal. Remember that there are a lot of paved and cobbled streets in Rome so you need to be able to walk a long time in them. Also, you won’t really be taking much transportation in Rome, you’ll mainly walk so you need to be prepared to walk long distances with these shoes.
- Comfortable sandals. I recommend getting a pair of comfortable leather sandals with a sole that is not thin. This will be perfect to walk around Rome and will look quite stylish. Another option is to wear Teva sandals. The sole is quite thick which
Accessories
- Sunglasses
- A hat can be useful since there isn’t much shade in a lot of the Roman sites and on a nice sunny day, the sun is quite strong.
- A light scarf. This will come in handy to visit the churches since you can wear it around your shoulders, especially if you don’t have sleeves.
- A small umbrella
- Sunscreen
- Jewellery but don’t take anything too valuable since unfortunately there are a lot of pickpockets in Rome.
Electronics
- International adapter (Italy uses type C and E sockets)
- Phone charger
- Headphones
- Power bank
- Camera
Paperwork
- Passport
- Travel Insurance
- Cash and/or Revolut / Transferwise card
- Bank card
What to Wear in Rome in September depending on the weather
☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️
If it’s sunny and therefore warm / hot, I recommend wearing a light dress and carrying a cardigan in your hand bag.
Another option is to wear light trousers or shorts with a t-shirt but again, not avoid the shorts if you are going to the Vatican.
I also recommend wearing cute sneakers with it so you can walk for a long time.
☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️
If it’s cloudy, light trousers with a t-shirt and cardigan will be ideal.
🌧️ If it rains 🌧️
If it rains, light trousers or jeans with a t-shirt, cardigan, light rain jacket and an umbrella will be the best options.
