Are you heading to Paris in September and wondering what to pack and wear? I’m here to help!

As a French person myself, I know very well what the weather is like in France and all the cultural aspects of fashion in France.

In this article, I’ll help you determine what you need to pack for Paris in September. This includes tips and essentials but also some ideas for cool fall outfits!

What is the weather like in Paris in September

paris in september

While July and August are the hottest months in Paris, September is the shoulder season but is still very warm (or even hot).

September is an important month in France since it’s la rentrée (Back To School). This means you get to enjoy all the perks of the summer without the crowds.

The weather is usually very nice and quite sunny. It’s warm so you can pack pretty light and it can even get quite hot, especially at the beginning of the month.

Temperatures average between 13 and 21°C (56°F to 70°F) but it can get higher than that.

In terms of rain, it’s usually sunny for the most part of the month but there can be some rain at the end of the month.

Of course, these are just averages so you need to check the actual weather forecast before you go.

Essential Packing List for Paris in September

Here is an example of a packing list for Paris in September. Please remember that I tried to be exhaustive but you need to make it yours.

Bags

  • 1 luggage or travel backpack: depending on the length of the trip this can be a hold luggage or a carry on.
  • 1 hand bag for the day or stylish backpack
  • 1 money belt – while this is not the most stylish item, it can come in handy to keep your money, cards and passport safe since you can slide it underneath your clothes and pickpockets wouldn’t be able to get to it.

Clothes

  • Dresses – these can be flowy midi dresses or shorter ones. Please remember that the French don’t like dresses that are too short or revealing but more casual chic. Long dresses are also good but can be less convenient for walking.
  • T-shirts or shirts with short sleeves. Take a few casual T-shirts (basics like black or white work best) but also flowy shirts. It’s better to take short sleeves since it will be warm.
  • Shorts or skirts. Don’t go crazy with the shorts since you won’t wear them in the evening but more during the day. For the skirts, make sure you take something comfortable and practical. Walking all day in a pencil skirt might be uncomfortable.
  • Light trousers. If you are visiting at the beginning of September, you probably won’t wear them during the day but they will come in handy in the evening.
  • 1 pair of jeans. Unless it’s raining, it’s unlikely you’d wear jeans during the day but they will be good to have for the evenings, especially at the end of the month.
  • Cardigans or light jumpers. These are for the evening but also during the day since you might walk in places a bit chillier.
  • Light jacket for the evening.
  • Leggings for the plane journey. Leggings are one of the best things to wear on the plane since they are very comfortable.
  • Underwear / Bras
  • Socks
  • Pyjamas

Shoes

  • Comfortable sneakers. I like travelling with Converses or Vans because they don’t take a lot of space and I find them comfortable but a lot of people prefer having a thicker sole. Remember that there are a lot of paved and cobbled streets in Paris so you need to be able to walk a long time in them.
  • Comfortable sandals. I recommend getting a pair of comfortable leather sandals with a sole that is not thin. This will be perfect to walk around Paris and will look quite stylish.
  • A pair of heels for a potential night out but this is not necessary and you won’t wear it during the day.

Accessories

  • Sunglasses
  • A hat
  • A small umbrella
  • Sunscreen
  • Jewellery – don’t take anything too valuable since unfortunately there are a lot of pickpockets in Paris.

Electronics

Paperwork

  • Passport
  • Travel Insurance
  • Cash and/or Revolut / Transferwise card
  • Bank card

What to Wear in Paris in September depending on the weather

Since we can’t forecast what the weather will be like, I can at least tell you what type of clothes to wear depending on the potential situations.

☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️

If the sun is shining, chances are that it will be quite warm. I recommend wearing a dress with leather sandals and a light cardigan in your handbag in case you go to a museum or restaurant with AC.

You should also consider taking a hat and some sunscreen.

☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️

Light trousers with a basic top or T-shirt is ideal when it’s cloudy. If it’s a bit chilly, you can also take a light jacket or cardigan.

🌧️ If it rains 🌧️

In case of rain, make sure to take an umbrella. If you have a light rain jacket, it could also come in handy but it’s not necessary.

In that case, I would recommend wearing jeans with a basic top and light jumper.

I hope this article has helped you understand what you should pack to visit Paris in September.
