Are you heading to Kyoto soon and want to see what Nishiki Market looks like? Then these incredible photos of Nishiki Market are perfect for you!

I visited Japan as a tour leader and one of my favourite places was Nishiki Market.

It’s famous for its street food and is known as Kyoto’s kitchen. It’s open every day from 9AM to 5PM and is an excellent place to discover Japanese cuisine.

You will find below all my best photos of Nishiki Market. Hopefully they will inspire you to visit.

1. Takoyaki

These are Takoyaki and they are located near the West Entrance. Takoyakis are balls made with batter and octopus. Absolutely delicious!

2. Covered Streets of Nishiki Market

Nishiki Market is basically a long covered street in Kyoto. You can see on the first photo what it looks like. It’s quite narrow but great if it’s raining.

There are some adjacent streets as well which creates small entrances (as you can see on the second photo).

3. Mochi

There are quite a few mochi stands in Nishiki Market and I couldn’t resist getting one of these strawberry mochis.

They are made with rice and the darker thing in the middle is a sweet bean paste.

4. Seafood Stands

There are a lot of seafood stand in Nishiki Market where you can see little skewers of prawns, octopus and more.

They have a little barbecue behind (you can see it in the first photo) and they cook it right in front of you.

5. West Entrance

This is the West Entrance of Nishiki Market. This is where I recommend entering the market. That way, you keep walking without any back and forth and you will then end up very close to Pontocho area.

It’s also convenient to go to Gion from there.

6. Soy Donuts

If you are vegan (or just want to try some delicious donuts), these soy donuts are for you!

The stand is located near the West Entrance. You can get them on their own or with a sauce. The one you see on my photos is the dark chocolate sauce.

7. Seafood Street Food

Here are the cooked version of the seafood screwers you saw earlier. They cooked them on the little barbecue and then gave it to them.

They also had seatings at the back so we decided to go there to have a break.

PRO TIP: When you buy food at Nishiki Market, ask them if they have seats inside or upstairs. It always look like they don’t but the seating areas are often hidden.

8. Crab Stand

As you probably understood by now, seafood is big in Nishiki Market and one of the things you will find the most is crab.

Crab is used for sushi but also many other dishes. The stands are very pretty and colourful.

9. More Food Stands

There are food stands everywhere and some of them are quite good if you want to bring back souvenirs.

Obviously, you need to check that you can actually bring these products back to your country but there are some cool spices as well as chopsticks and sake that could be a great option.
