If you are heading to Costa Rica in December and wondering what to wear, this article is for you!
December is one of the best times to visit Costa Rica, it marks the start of the dry season in most regions which means you can expect better weather than in November.
The weather is warm, the landscapes are lush from the recent rainy season, and the festive atmosphere is in full swing with holiday celebrations (though I’ll admit, it feels a bit weird to see all these Christmas decorations in a tropical weather).
In A Rush? Here Are My Top Picks for Costa Rica in December
However, the climate can vary depending on where you are in the country, from the tropical beaches to the cooler mountain regions which means you need to pack different types of clothes.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to pack for your December trip to Costa Rica and give you some outfit ideas.
What is the Weather Like in Costa Rica in December?

Costa Rica’s weather in December can vary by region, but generally, it’s warm and fairly dry, especially on the Pacific coast.
The Caribbean coast may still experience some rain especially at the beginning of the month, but it’s usually less frequent.
Temperatures typically range from 20°C to 32°C (68°F to 90°F) depending on the region.
- Pacific Coast: Dry and sunny with temperatures around 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F).
- Caribbean Coast: Warm with some rain, temperatures around 22°C to 30°C (72°F to 86°F).
- Central Valley and Highlands: Cooler, especially in the evenings, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 26°C (59°F to 79°F) but it can drop much below at night.
Essential Packing List for Costa Rica in December
The key to pack for Costa Rica in December is to plan for both hot and colder weather as well as being ready for some rain (especially at the beginning of the month).
Clothing
- T-shirt and tank tops: Take a selection of short-sleeve tops. I recommend taking basic colours so you can mix them with different bottoms. Try to avoid synthetic fabrics as you will already be sweating a lot and that won’t help.
- Shorts: this will be what you’ll wear the most. Shorts are practical (especially in hot weather) and can be used to go to the beach, hiking and more.
- Surf shorts: Costa Rica is one of the best places in the world for surfing so they will come in handy if you decide to give it a go. Regardless though, I highly recommend taking some quick-dry shorts because they are very practical no matter what you do. They will also come in handy for other types of water activities such as white-water rafting or kayaking.
- Swimwear: Bring at least two swimsuits, as you’ll likely be spending a lot of time in the water, whether at the beach, in hot springs or on a kayak.
- Rash Guard: For sun protection while swimming or surfing, a rash guard is a great idea.
- Dresses: You will be wearing dresses a lot, especially in the evening or for beach days. These can be short or maxi dresses, both work.
- Beach Cover-Up: A lightweight cover-up is perfect for going from the beach to a casual lunch or exploring coastal towns.
- Lightweight Long-Sleeve Shirts and Pants: These can come in handy if you’re going to Monteverde and do a night tour since it can be quite cold and there are a lot of insects.
- Leggings: They will be useful during the plane journey but also if you go ziplining in Monteverde.
- Sweater or fleece: Evenings can be cooler, especially in the highlands, so a light jacket or sweater is useful. You won’t use it in San José or on the coast but in places such as Monteverde, they will come in handy. No need to take many of them though, one should be enough.
- Rain Jacket or Poncho: While December is generally dry, it’s always a good idea to be prepared for a sudden shower, especially on the Caribbean side or in mountainous areas. This is Costa Rica after all so rain is always a possibility.
Footwear
- Comfortable Walking Sandals: Sturdy sandals are ideal for the beach and casual sightseeing. I use Teva sandals and they are very practical for that kind of destination.
- Hiking Shoes or Boots: If you plan on hiking, pack a pair of sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good grip, especially if you’re heading to cloud forests or national parks. They will be particularly handy in Monteverde, La Fortuna and many even Tortuguero.
- Water Shoes: These are so practical in Costa Rica. Whether it’s for a kayaking tour, white-water rafting or simply swimming in a waterfall, you’ll love having them.
- Flip-Flops: Perfect for the beach or poolside.
PRO TIP: Make sure your hiking shoes are well broken-in to avoid blisters during your adventures.
Accessories

- Sun Hat or Cap: This is essential since Costa Rica can also be very sunny.
- Sunglasses
- Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes and other insects can be an issue, especially in the jungle or near water, so bring a good insect repellent.
- Sunscreen: A high-SPF sunscreen is a must to protect your skin from the intense tropical sun.
- Beach Towel: A quick-dry towel or sarong is useful for the beach or impromptu swims.
- A Microfiber Poncho: This is so practical especially after doing a water activity or going to the beach. It’s a great way to dry quickly and you can also use it to change into your swimwear.
Bags
- Luggage or Travel Backpack: This is entirely up to you but I would recommend a travel backpack since you’ll probably be moving around a lot in Costa Rica.
- Daypack: A small, lightweight backpack is handy for day trips and excursions.
- Fanny Pack or Money Belt: This is super useful because you can access your money quickly and it keeps it safe.
- Packing cubes: They make packing your bag or suitcase so much easier and safe you space.
Electronics
- Phone & Charger
- E-Sim: I recommend getting your e-sim with Airalo since you will need internet during your trip
- Power Bank: You’ll be using your phone a lot so a power bank will come in very handy
- Camera: The wildlife in Costa Rica is incredible so I highly recommend taking a good camera with a good zoom
- Waterproof Phone Case: This will come in very handy when you go to waterfalls or do some water activities.
- International Adapter: Costa Rica uses type A and B outlets, the same as the US, so if you’re coming from elsewhere, bring an adapter.
Paperwork
- Passport & Copies
- Travel Insurance Documents
- Hotel Reservation & Itinerary
- Bank Card + Travel Money Card: Consider a card like Revolut or Wise to avoid high currency exchange fees.
- Driver’s Licence: If you plan to rent a car (which you should), bring your licence and an international licence if you have one.
With this packing list and outfit ideas, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy everything Costa Rica has to offer in December, from its beautiful beaches to its lush rainforests and towns.
