Located in North West England, the Peak District is the ultimate destination for nature lovers. It was the first national park in the UK and is known for its stunning landscapes and outdoor activities. But that’s not all, it’s also home to some of the most picturesque villages in England.
Each village offers its unique charm and history. They are also excellent bases for hikers who want to explore the peaks.
I live near the Peak District and go there almost every weekend so I’ll share with you 5 beautiful villages in the Peak District that you should visit at least once.
1. Castleton
Castleton is my ultimate favourite village in the Peak District and you can only visit one place in the Peaks, that should be it.
Firstly, the village itself is incredibly cute and picturesque with its old stone houses and tea rooms.
It’s a perfect starting point for hikes up to Mam Tor for panoramic views of the valley. Make sure to take the ridge walk so you get views over the valley and Castleton from Mam Tor and Back Tor.
Another interesting thing to do is to visit the caves in the area. Speedwell, Blue John and Peak Cavern are particularly beautiful.
Finally, you can also go up to Peveril castle which is an English Heritage site.
LOCAL TIP: Make sure to get there early to avoid the crowds. It can get quite busy.
2. Edale
Edale is a haven for walkers and nature lovers since it’s the starting point for many famous hikes in the Peaks.
It’s also worth noting that there is a train station and you can get there in less than 30 minutes from Manchester which makes it very convenient.
The village itself is very cute and as for most Peak District villages, there are a lot of old stone houses.
But if you want to make the best of the experience, head on one of the walking trails. Kinder Scout, Jacob’s Ladder and Mam Tor are particularly beautiful.
PRO TIP: If you are visiting on a sunday, go to the Old Nags Head for a roast. It’s excellent.
3. Bamford
Bamford is a peaceful village located near Sheffield. It’s a very picturesque village that offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and easy access to the serene Ladybower.
It’s perfect for a quiet escape and serves as a great base for exploring the Dark Peak area.
If you love hiking or simply admiring breathtaking landscapes, Bamford Edge is a must-visit. It’s a beautiful spot and one of the most Instagrammable places in the Peak District.
It offers panoramic views of the Hope Valley and Ladybower Reservoir that you won’t want to miss.
4. Bakewell
Bakewell is one of the cutest Peak District villages for sure but it’s also a paradise for foodies since it’s where the famous Bakewell Tart was invented.
There are many things you can do in Bakewell. If you like discovering historical landmarks, head to All Saints Church or the Bakewell Old House Museum (it’s set in an old Tudor house and it’s very interesting).
For a unique (and romantic) sight, go to the Lovelock Bridge where you can find loads of padlocks left by love birds. It’s basically our little Peak District version of Paris’ Pont des Arts.
Finally, there are a lot of walks that you can do around Bakewell, including the Monsal Trail which goes all the way to Chee Dale.
LOCAL TIP: Obviously, trying a Bakewell Tart in Bakewell should be on your list. For the best experience, head to the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop. Their recipe is a closely guarded secret!
5. Ashford-in-the-Water
This charming village is famous for its ancient sheepwash bridge and picturesque setting by the River Wye.
Walking through Ashford-in-the-Water feels like stepping back in time, with its beautiful limestone cottages and tranquil river walks.
If you’ve been to the Cotswolds before, you will find similarities with Bourton-on-the-water.
GOOD TO KNOW: The village is renowned for well dressing in late spring. It’s a unique Derbyshire tradition where the village wells are decorated with beautiful, elaborate designs made from flower petals.
