Planning a trip to Tokyo in January? Wondering what to pack? You’ve come to the right place! In this article, I tell you everything you need to know to pack your bag for Tokyo, Japan.

Winter is one of the best times of the year to visit Japan. With so many ski resorts and beautiful mountains, it’s definitely a great destination for a winter trip.

Now if you’re planning on spending some time in Tokyo (which I’m sure you are if you’re here), you should be prepared for cold weather.

January is not the most reliable month because it tends to be very cold but with the odd warmer days. This means that you will need to wear layers.

You can find below my recommended packing list as well as some outfit inspiration.

What is the Weather Like in Tokyo in January?

tokyo in winter

January is one of Tokyo’s coldest months, with temperatures generally ranging from 2°C to 10°C (36°F to 50°F). Snow is rare but not impossible, while rainfall is light.

Days are often sunny and clear, which makes it pleasant for sightseeing, as long as you’re prepared for the chill.

As a general thing, it’s good to be prepared for everything because it can be very cold but sometimes you get very nice days as well so wearing layers is key.

Essential Packing List for Tokyo in January

You can find below my packing list for Tokyo in January.

Please bear in mind that packing lists are always a bit personal and while I tried to cover all angles, you need to adapt it to your own style.

Clothing

  • Warm Coat: A thick wool coat, insulated coat or puffer jacket is essential. People tend to wear neutral colors in Tokyo so black, beige and grey are the best colors to fit in. Just make sure that it’s a good and warm coat because that’s the most important piece of clothing you’ll need.
  • Knit Sweaters: Pack a few warm sweaters that you can layer. Again, neutral colors are the most practical especially since that means that you can pair them with anything.
  • Thermal Tops: Lightweight thermal tops make great base layers and will keep you warm without adding bulk. Merino wool is a great fabric for that because it keeps you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot which means you won’t feel too hot when you’re inside.
  • Long-Sleeve Shirts
  • Pants and Jeans: Warm, comfortable pants or jeans are perfect for daily wear.
  • Fleece-lined leggings: Consider fleece-lined leggings or tights if you want extra warmth. Japanese people tend to wear pretty smart clothes so they wear pants on top of the leggings but you can also wear the fleece-lined leggings by themselves. They are also very practical if you are going on day trips and planning to hike a bit.
  • Warm Dresses with Tights: If you prefer dresses, go for wool or other thick materials and pair them with thermal tights.
  • Winter skirts: Also an option if you pair them with tights and a knit sweater.
  • Cardigan: A cardigan is a good mid-layer and makes it easy to adjust when moving between indoor and outdoor spaces. It’s practical for days where you’re planning more indoor activities such as the museums or TeamLabs.

Shoes

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: You will be walking a lot in Tokyo so make sure you take comfortable walking shoes. You don’t need hiking shoes or anything of the kind but just comfortable sneakers, ideally with a thick sole and waterproof.
  • Ankle Boots: Flat ankle boots are also very practical.
  • Timberland Boots: I loved wearing my Timberlands in winter in Tokyo because they kept my feet very warm and I could walk with them for a long time. Also, they go well with any trousers and dresses.
  • Knee High Boots: These are perfect on a cold day because they protect your calves. Just make sure you are taking flat ones since heels are not ideal.

Accessories

  • Thermal Socks: There is nothing worse than having cold feet so I recommend taking warm socks.
  • Gloves
  • Scarf: A warm scarf is both practical and fashionable.
  • Beanie or Hat:.
  • Face Mask: People in Japan wear facemasks a lot, especially in winter, so having a couple of them can come in handy.

Electronics

Paperwork

  • Passport
  • JR Pass or Suica/Pasmo Card: If you’re planning on traveling within or beyond Tokyo, a JR Pass as well as a reloadable Suica/Pasmo card will be convenient.
  • Travel Insurance Documents
  • Hotel Reservation & Itinerary.

What to Wear in Tokyo in January Depending on the Weather

☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️
A long-sleeve t-shirt under a cozy sweater and warm coat with jeans or pants is perfect. Add a scarf and beanie to stay comfortable while you explore.

☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️
Dress in layers with a thermal shirt, long-sleeve top, and sweater under your coat. Comfortable pants, a scarf, and gloves will keep you cozy.

❄️ If it’s snowy ❄️
Snow is rare, but if it does snow, go for your warmest coat, thermal layers, and waterproof shoes or boots. Don’t forget a hat, gloves, and scarf to stay extra warm.

Things Not to Wear in Tokyo in January

  • Thin Jackets: Tokyo’s winter requires a warm coat, so leave lighter jackets at home.
  • Non-Waterproof Shoes: While rain and snow are minimal, waterproof or water-resistant shoes are ideal for cold, damp days.
  • Shorts and Summer Dresses: January is far too cold for lightweight clothing.
  • Heels
