Heading to Italy this winter and wondering what you should wear in Rome in February? I’ve got you covered!

I love visiting Rome in February because it’s a lot quieter. Most people don’t choose to visit in winter which means that there are less tourists and you can visit all the main attractions without too many people.

Of course, February is still winter which means that you should expect cold-ish weather and some rain but with the right outfits, that shouldn’t stop you.

Also, February is Valentine’s Day month and how romantic is that!

You will find below an overview of the weather in Rome in February as well as my recommended packing list.

What is the Weather Like in Rome in February?

February in Rome is the tail end of winter, so you can expect cool temperatures ranging from 4°C to 13°C (39°F to 55°F)

It’s generally mild during the day but can feel chilly in the mornings and evenings.

As a general rule, it’s better to be prepared for the cold but it’s not Northern Europe either so you don’t need overly warm layers.

Rain is likely, with about 7-10 rainy days on average, so you’ll need to be prepared for occasional showers.

While snow is extremely rare, the damp air can feel colder than the thermometer suggests.

Dressing in layers and having waterproof options is the way to go.

Essential Packing List for Rome in February

Clothing

  • Medium-weight Coat: A medium-weight wool coat or a stylish trench coat is perfect for staying warm while blending in with the locals. You can also opt for a medium-weight puffer jacket. If you have a waterproof jacket, it would be ideal as rain is likely. Things like waterproof hiking jackets are not the best way to fit in with the local fashion but they are comfortable and ideal for the weather so it’s also an option.
  • Sweaters: Bring cozy knit sweaters or turtlenecks in neutral or earthy tones for layering.
  • Long-Sleeved Tops: Ideal for wearing underneath sweaters or on warmer days with a lighter jacket.
  • Short-sleeved T-shirts: If the weather is not too cold (which can happen), it’s handy to have some short-sleeved t-shirts as a first layer instead of the long sleeves. On a nice and sunny day you will feel better with those.
  • Trousers: Jeans and comfortable trousers are ideal for sightseeing in Rome. You can also opt for some wide pants but I would recommend packing a pair of tights as you may feel a bit cold otherwise.
  • Dresses/Skirts: Wool or sweater dresses paired with warm tights are also a great thing to wear. Don’t opt for summer dresses though, they need to be somewhat warm. You can also wear a bodysuit or tank top underneath for extra warmth.
  • Tights: Essential if you are planning on wearing skirts and dresses. I’d recommend opaque ones. They don’t need to be overly thick though.
  • Pajamas
  • Underwear and Socks

Shoes

  • Ankle Boots: Leather flat chelsea boots are perfect in Rome. Remember, there are a lot of cobblestones so you need to wear comfortable footwear. It’s better if they have a thick sole though since you will feel the cobblestones too much if they are too thin and flat.
  • Comfortable Sneakers: Water-resistant sneakers such as AirForce are also practical. You can walk for a long time with that kind of shoes and it’s great if you visit the parks.
  • Leather Boots: Tall boots are great with dresses and keep you warm while looking amazing. Just make sure they are flat(ish) since heels are not great in Rome.

Bags

  • Crossbody Bag: This is the best type of bag to have in Rome since it’s more secure than a handbag and you can keep your belongings safe.
  • Daypack or Tote: Useful for carrying water, snacks as well as an umbrella. It can also come in handy if you go shopping (which you probably will since, when in Rome…)

Accessories

  • Scarf: Lightweight or wool scarves are always practical.
  • Gloves: While it’s not that cold, gloves can be handy if you’re planning on spending a lot of time outside.
  • Hat: A beanie or waterproof hat is practical to protect you from the cold and in case of rain.
  • Umbrella: February is a rainy month in Rome so make sure to pack one.
  • Sunglasses: Even in winter, Rome can have sunny moments so a pair of sunglasses is handy. You’ll notice that a lot of Italians wear sunglasses in winter, it’s not a stereotype!

Electronics

  • Universal Adapter: Italy uses Type C, F, or L plugs, so pack an European or international adapter.
  • Power Bank: You’ll be using your phone a lot so having a power bank will ensure you don’t run out of battery.
  • Camera or Smartphone

Paperwork

  • Passport: Make sure it’s valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.
  • Travel Insurance
  • Hotel Reservations and Tickets
  • Bank Cards and Cash
