What is the Weather Like in Rome in December?
Rome in December is cold but not freezing, with temperatures ranging from 4°C to 12°C (39°F to 54°F). Rain is quite common, and the days are short, with early sunsets so that’s something to take into consideration when you plan your itinerary.
Despite the chill, Rome’s December weather is perfect for exploring historic sites, especially the museums.
With Christmas decorations brightening up the city and plenty of festive activities, it’s a wonderful time to visit.
Essential Packing List for Rome in December
Here’s a comprehensive packing list for your December trip to Rome, ensuring you stay warm, comfortable, and stylish.
Clothing
- Warm Coat: A heavy wool or insulated coat is essential for staying warm during cold days. Opt for something stylish, like a tailored coat, to blend in with the fashion-conscious Romans. A waterproof trench with a warm lining can also work if you prefer something lighter but make sure to pack more layers in this case.
- Knit Sweaters: Bring several thick knit sweaters to layer under your coat. Neutral colors are versatile and chic, making it easy to mix and match outfits.
- Long-Sleeve Tops: These are great for layering under sweaters.
- Tank Tops: I find them to be a great extra layer that you can wear under the long-sleeve t-shirt. They are not visible and don’t alter your outfit but truly add more warmth.
- Trousers and Jeans: Jeans or warm trousers are practical for walking around the city. They’re easy to pair with sweaters and coats for a polished look.
- Warm Dresses with Tights: Winter dresses with opaque tights are ideal if you want to look a bit more stylish while staying comfortable.
- Cardigans: They are a great extra layer with a dress or skirt.
- Winter Skirts with Tights: If you prefer skirts, pair them with warm tights and a cozy sweater for a classic winter look.
- Leggings: They are practical and comfortable for the flight but not something you should be wearing while exploring.
- Pyjamas
- Underwear
- Socks
Footwear
- Comfortable Walking Shoes: Rome’s cobblestone streets can be quite hard on your feet so make sure to pack comfortable shoes. Leather sneakers or sturdy flats are great, but ensure they’re at least somewhat waterproof. While they should be comfortable, I don’t recommend hiking shoes either!
- Ankle Boots: Stylish leather or waterproof ankle boots are ideal for December. They’re warm, practical, and fashionable.
- Leather boots: flat high boots are also great since they will keep you warm and are very comfortable. You can easily wear them with a dress or skirt.
Bags
- Suitcase or Travel Backpack: This is entirely up to you. While I appreciate a suitcase is practical for most people, I actually prefer taking a travel backpack for Rome because you can’t use the wheels on the cobblestones anyway.
- Handbag or Stylish Backpack:
- Money Belt: Wearing a money belt under your coat is the best way to keep your money safe.
Accessories
- Small Umbrella: A must-have for December’s frequent rain.
- Warm Scarf: A thick, warm scarf adds both style and warmth.
- Gloves and Hat: Keep your hands and head warm with stylish gloves and a hat. A wool beanie or a classic beret can add a fashionable touch.
- Jewellery: Pieces that aren’t too valuable though because of the pickpockets.
Electronics
- Phone & Charger
- Power Bank
- Headphones
- Camera
- International Adapter: Italy uses type C and F outlets.
Paperwork
- Passport & Copies
- Travel Insurance Documents
- Hotel Reservation & Itinerary
- Bank Card + Travel Money Card: Consider using a card like Revolut or Wise to avoid currency conversion fees.
What to Wear in Rome in December Depending on the Weather
- ☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️
A long-sleeve top, a thick sweater, and a warm coat, paired with jeans and ankle boots, will keep you comfortable. Don’t forget a scarf and hat for a touch of style. - ☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️
Cute winter dress with opaque tights and flat leather boots. Make sure to also wear a nice coat, a scarf and a hat. - 🌧️ If it rains 🌧️
A waterproof coat over a thicker knit sweater, paired with ankle boots, will keep you dry and warm. An umbrella is essential for navigating the rain.
Things Not to Wear in Rome in December
- Shorts: December is too cold for shorts.
- Light Summer Dresses: These won’t keep you warm enough.
- Thin, Non-Waterproof Shoes: With the likelihood of rain, non-waterproof shoes will leave your feet cold and wet.
- Heels: Honestly with the cobblestones it’s a nightmare so avoid them at all cost.
- Christmas jumpers: I know it’s tempting but Italians don’t really wear Christmas jumpers so I would skip them.
I hope this packing list has helped you and you’re now ready to go to Rome in December!
