What to Wear in Madrid in January: Ultimate Packing List & Outfit Tips

If you are heading to Madrid in January and wondering what you should wear? I’m here to help!

Madrid is one of the best cities to visit in Spain and while most people visit later on in the year, I find January to be a great month because it’s less busy and you can truly enjoy the museums.

While this is the coldest time of the year, Madrid’s winter is still mild compared to other parts of Europe. It’s usually quite sunny (though occasional rain is always an option) with cold mornings.

Unlike some destinations in Northern Europe where you will need special winter clothes, winter in Madrid is a bit the equivalent of fall in England which means you don’t need too many layers but it’s still important to choose your clothes carefully if you want to stay stylish.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to pack for a January trip to Madrid.

What is the Weather Like in Madrid in January?

madrid in january

January in Madrid is quite chilly, with average temperatures ranging from 3°C to 12°C (37°F to 54°F).

Mornings and nights can drop close to freezing, and though it’s generally dry, occasional rain or even light snow isn’t unheard of.

Sunny, clear days are common, but it’s wise to be prepared for varying conditions with layers and warm outerwear.

Essential Packing List for Madrid in January

Here’s everything you need to pack for a comfortable, stylish, and warm winter trip to Madrid!

Clothing

  • Warm Coat: A medium-to-heavy winter coat, preferably insulated or wool, is essential for Madrid’s chilly mornings and evenings. As a general thing, I recommend a thick wool coat because that matches the style of the locals and you don’t need something too heavy either.
  • Knit Sweaters: Bring a few cozy knit sweaters to layer under your coat. Neutral colors are versatile for mixing and matching.
  • Turtlenecks: We love turtlenecks in Europe and Madrid is no different. It’s a great piece of clothing to wear in January because it keeps you warm and cozy without being too bulky and protects your neck.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: Long-sleeve tops are great for layering under sweaters or wearing alone when visiting indoor attractions.
  • Thermal Tops: Lightweight thermals are helpful for cold days if you plan to go on a day trip to the mountains for example.
  • Jeans and Pants: A couple of pairs of jeans or thicker pants are perfect during the day.
  • Warm Dresses with Tights: If you like dresses, opt for warmer fabrics and pair with tights. Darker and beige colors tend to blend well with winter fashion in Madrid. You can also opt for skirts with tights paired with a long sleeve top and a knit sweater.
  • Cardigans or Mid-Layer Jackets: they are very practical if you are going to visit the museums since wearing your coat inside might be a little too much.
  • Pyjamas
  • Socks
  • Underwear

Shoes

  • Comfortable Sneakers: You’ll walk a lot in Madrid so it’s important to have comfortable sneakers. You do not need hiking boots or anything of the kind but just a pair of stylish sneakers. Ideally, try to wear sneakers with a thick sole since there are cobblestones.
  • Ankle Boots: They are both stylish and practical. You can wear them with any outfit.
  • Knee High Boots: These go perfectly with dresses and tights.

Accessories

  • Scarf
  • Beanie or Hat
  • Gloves
  • Compact Umbrella: Rain is infrequent, but having a small umbrella on hand is always wise when travelling.

Electronics

  • Phone & Charger
  • Power Bank
  • Camera
  • International Adapter: Spain uses type C and F outlets, so bring an adapter if needed.
  • Headphones are practical for public transport and the plane journey.

Paperwork

  • Passport & Copies: Carry a copy of your passport as a backup for identification.
  • Hotel Reservations & Itinerary
  • Travel Insurance: Important to have on hand in case of any unexpected situations.
  • Bank Cards & Some Cash: A Revolut card is very practical to save on exchange fees. I also recommend having some cash since it’s practical for markets and other small cafés.

What to Wear in Madrid in January Depending on the Weather

☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️
Wear a long-sleeve top, a knit sweater, and a warm coat with jeans and comfortable walking shoes. A scarf will add warmth and style.

☁️ If it’s cloudy ☁️
A sweater with a long-sleeve t-shirt under your winter coat with warm pants is ideal. Accessorize with a scarf, gloves, and a hat for added coziness.

🌧️ If it rains 🌧️
Wear a waterproof coat or bring a compact umbrella. Pair with ankle boots and layer with a sweater and thermal top.

Things Not to Wear in Madrid in January

  • Thin Jackets: It may not be the coldest place in Europe but January is still cold in Madrid so you need a winter coat.
  • Heels: The cobblestone streets and frequent walking make heels impractical. Stick to flat, comfortable shoes or boots.
  • Summer Clothes: January is much too cold for shorts or thin dresses, even on milder days.
  • Overly Casual Outfits: Madrid locals tend to dress stylishly, so opt for well-fitted and layered clothing over overly sporty or casual pieces.
