If you like skiing and snowboarding, you’ll also be in for a treat since Italy is one of the best places in Europe for winter sports.

It’s important to note though that Italy has different climates and depending on which region you visit, you will need different clothes.

What is the Weather Like in Italy in December?

The weather in Italy can vary significantly depending on which part of the country you’re visiting. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Northern Italy (Milan, Venice, Turin): Expect cold, damp weather. Temperatures range from 1°C to 8°C (34°F to 46°F). Rain is common, and snow can fall in more mountainous areas like the Alps.
  • Central Italy (Rome, Florence): The weather is cooler but still relatively mild, ranging from 5°C to 13°C (41°F to 55°F). Expect rain showers and chilly evenings.
  • Southern Italy (Naples, Sicily, Amalfi Coast): The south experiences the mildest weather, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 16°C (50°F to 61°F). Rain is possible, but overall, it’s more temperate compared to the north meaning you won’t need clothes as warm.

Essential Packing List for Italy in December

Once again, keep in mind that your packing will depend on which region you are visiting. No matter what, layers are recommended since they will keep you warm in the north and that means you can peel them off in the south.

If you’re planning on exploring different parts of Italy during the same trip, you will need to pack more layers.

Clothing

  • Coat or Jacket:
    • For northern Italy, bring a heavy, insulated winter coat or a puffer jacket to keep warm, especially in the evenings. A waterproof trench or parka will also help you stay dry in case of rain or snow.
    • In southern Italy, a medium-weight wool or insulated jacket should be enough, though you may want a waterproof option for rainy days.
  • Knit Sweaters: Pack a couple of cozy knit sweaters for colder days in the north, while in the south, lighter knits or cardigans will work well for layering.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: These are essentials regardless of the region you visit since they will keep you warm if needed but can also be a layer of their own right paired with a cardigan if it’s a bit warmer.
  • Trousers and Jeans: Comfortable trousers or well-fitted jeans are great for walking around cities or travelling between regions. In southern Italy, you may be comfortable wearing lighter trousers but jeans are also ideal.
  • Fleece lined leggings: If you’re planning on going to the Alps or Dolomites, these will come in super handy but if you are only visiting cities, they aren’t necessary. While practical, Italians don’t really wear leggings (unless they are going to yoga or the gym) so if you don’t want to look like a tourist, it’s best to avoid in cities.
  • Skirts and Dresses with Tights: If you’d like something that looks a bit more stylish (whether it’s during the day while sightseeing or in the evening for dinner), then a winter dress or skirt with tights is ideal. If you are visiting the North, opt for opaque tights whereas you can get away with lighter ones in the South.
  • Leggings: Great for layering or wearing on the plane.
  • Pyjamas

Footwear

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: Italy’s cobblestone streets are charming but tough on the feet. Comfortable, sturdy sneakers or shoes with thicker soles are a must. Waterproof options are ideal for rainy days.
  • Ankle Boots: A chic and practical option, ankle boots will keep your feet warm and stylish. If you’re in northern Italy, consider knee-high boots for extra warmth.

Accessories

  • Crossbody Bag or purse: A secure, practical bag is essential for exploring cities like Rome or Venice. A crossbody bag is great for carrying your essentials while keeping your hands free.
  • Scarf: Italians love scarves, and they are both practical and stylish. Opt for a thicker one in the north, while a lighter scarf will suffice for southern regions.
  • Hat and Gloves: They will keep you warm during the day in the North and in the evening in the South. Opt for a wool beanie and touch screen gloves so you can still use your phone while exploring.
  • Umbrella: December can be rainy, so pack a small, portable umbrella to keep dry.
  • Sunglasses: You may still get plenty of bright, sunny days, especially in southern Italy.
  • Money belt: Unfortunately some Italian cities (such as Rome or Venice) are full of pickpockets so if you want to keep your money and passport safe, I highly recommend getting a money belt. You can wear it under your coat so nobody will see it but it will keep everything safe.
  • Tote bag: Shopping opportunities are endless in Italy, especially at Christmas time so having a tote bag is handy to have if you want to carry around your souvenirs.
