What is the Weather Like in Ireland in November?

ireland in november

Ireland in November sees temperatures ranging from 4°C to 11°C (39°F to 52°F)

Rain is frequent, and the days are shorter, with only about 8 hours of daylight.

You might experience everything from misty mornings and breezy afternoons to the occasional crisp, clear day. Layering and waterproof clothing will be essential to stay warm and dry.

Despite the unpredictable weather, November is a lovely time to visit Ireland. The lush green countryside, rugged coastlines, and charming villages take on a more serene, peaceful atmosphere.

Essential Packing List for Ireland in November

Below is the ultimate packing list to ensure you stay warm, dry, and ready to explore Ireland in any weather.

Clothing

  • Waterproof Jacket: A warm, waterproof jacket is essential. Ireland’s rain showers can pop up at any moment, and a good jacket will help you enjoy your day despite the weather. Make sure that it’s warm and cosy because it’s not just rainy, it’s also pretty cold.
  • Knit Sweaters: Warm sweaters are ideal for layering and will keep you comfortable in the cool, crisp air. Neutral or earthy tones will help you blend in with Ireland’s natural beauty and will be easier to pair.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: Great for layering under sweaters or wearing on milder days. If you can, I also recommend getting merino wool tops and thermal layers to keep you warmer.
  • Bodysuits: These are ideal as an extra layer. They will keep you very warm since they are tucked in your trousers or tights.
  • Trousers and Jeans: Comfortable, thicker trousers or jeans are perfect for walking around both cities and countryside.
  • Thermal Layers: These are great for extra warmth, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors or visit rural areas.
  • Knit dresses with tights: If you are visiting a city (like Dublin) and want a more stylish outfit, especially to go out, I highly recommend taking some autumn or winter dresses with thick tights.
  • Fluffy leggings: While these can look a bit ridiculous when you open the package, they are actually incredibly practical because they keep you warm and are very comfortable.
  • Waterproof trousers: If you are planning to explore Ireland beyond Dublin and going hiking, a pair of waterproof trousers you can wear on top of your warm leggings will be ideal to keep you dry.

Footwear

  • Waterproof Hiking Boots: these will be ideal if you go hiking. Make sure to take waterproof and sturdy hiking shoes.
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: For city strolls or less rainy days, choose comfortable shoes or sneakers that you can wear all day. I still recommend taking waterproof sneakers though since it could rain at any time. Shoes like Converses won’t work too well because the fabric will get soaked and there is nothing worse than having wet feet all day.
  • Leather boots: If you have a pair of knee high leather boots or even ankle boots, these will be ideal for city sightseeing. You can easily pair them with a dress or jeans.

Bags

  • Water-Resistant Backpack or Crossbody Bag to wear during the day and carry your belongings.
  • Suitcase or travel backpack: This can be a checked-in luggage or a carry on, depending on the length of your trip.

Accessories

  • Umbrella: A small, windproof umbrella will come in handy for the frequent rain showers. While a full size umbrella would be better, it’s more practical to take a compact umbrella that you can carry in your bag.
  • Scarf, beanie and Gloves: These will keep you warm during windy and chilly days, especially if you’re exploring the coast or countryside.
  • Travel-Sized Hand Sanitizer
  • Reusable Water Bottle

Electronics

  • Phone & Charger
  • Power Bank: You’ll be using your phone a lot so it’s good to have a back-up battery with you.
  • Camera
  • Universal Adapter: Ireland uses Type G outlets, so bring an adapter if needed. They are same sockets than in the UK so if you have a UK adapter, it will work.

Paperwork

  • Passport & Copies
  • Travel Insurance Documents
  • Hotel Reservations & Itinerary
  • Bank Card & Travel Money Card: Cards like Revolut or Wise are excellent for avoiding high foreign transaction fees and currency exchange.

What to Wear in Ireland in November Depending on the Weather

☀️ If it’s sunny

Wear a long-sleeve top under a cozy sweater, with jeans or trousers and comfortable walking shoes as well as a warm (and still waterproof) coat.

☁️ If it’s cloudy

Layer with a knit sweater over a long-sleeve shirt and wear thermal leggings under your jeans for extra warmth. Add a scarf, a beanie, gloves and waterproof shoes to keep warm while exploring.

🌧️ If it rains

A waterproof jacket and waterproof boots are essential. Wear layered clothing underneath, like a sweater and thermal shirt, and carry a compact umbrella to stay dry.

Things Not to Wear in Ireland in November

  • Shorts: It’s too cold for shorts in November.
  • Heels: Heels are impractical for the uneven cobblestone streets so unless you are attending a specific event, you can leave these at home.
  • Thin, Non-Waterproof Shoes: With Ireland’s high chance of rain, non-waterproof shoes will leave your feet wet and cold.

With this packing list and these insider tips, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your November trip to Ireland, no matter what the weather throws your way!
