Planning a trip to Ireland this winter and wondering what you should be wearing? I get it, it’s not an easy destination to pack for.

Exactly like the UK, Ireland is not exactly blessed with the best of weather and November can be a tough month.

This means that you should always hope for the best of course but pack for the worse!

That having been said, don’t worry too much, there are loads of shops in Dublin (including the beloved Penneys) so you can easily get what you need if you’re missing anything.

November in Dublin brings cool temperatures, frequent rain, and shorter days which means you will need layers.

On the plus side though, there are fewer tourists which means you can enjoy the city a lot more.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to pack for your November trip to Dublin, along with some tips to help you enjoy the city like a local.

What is the Weather Like in Dublin in November?

dublin in november

Dublin in November is chilly, with temperatures typically ranging between 4°C and 10°C (39°F to 50°F).

Rain is common, and while you might get lucky with a few clear days, expect overcast skies and frequent showers.

Layering and waterproof gear will be your best friends during this time.

Even with the cool, wet weather, November is a great time to explore Dublin’s museums, historic streets, and cozy pubs without the peak-season crowds.

That having been said, the weather in Ireland is notoriously unreliable so you could be lucky and get more sunshine than planned for! Who knows? Make sure to check the forecast the week before you go and pack enough layers. No matter what, it’s not Spain and you shouldn’t expect it to be warm.

Essential Packing List for Dublin in November

You can find below my packing list for Dublin in November. Please bear in mind that packing is a bit of a personal choice so you should adapt it to your own tastes and style

Clothing

  • Warm Waterproof Coat: it rains a lot in Dublin and since it can be quite cold as well, a waterproof coat is simply essential. I recommend taking a warm one that looks quite stylish as well so you can wear your layers underneath and don’t have to overthink it when it starts raining.
  • Knit Sweaters: they are the ideal layer. They bring warmth and look very cosy. Try to opt for wool or merino wool so it keeps you warmer.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops: perfect to wear underneath your sweaters.
  • Tank Tops: obviously you won’t be wearing them just by themselves but they are great if you need an extra layer. I always feel like the wind and rain in Dublin is making me extra cold so I like wearing a tank top as a first layer. A bodysuit is also a great option because it keeps your chins warm.
  • Trousers and Jeans: Choose dark jeans or warm trousers that are practical for walking around the city.
  • Thermal Leggings: These are great for wearing under your jeans or trousers on extra cold days. Also, if you feel more comfortable wearing leggings, you can opt for the warm fluffy ones and wear them instead of jeans. Fashion style is quite casual in Ireland so it’s definitely an option.
  • Winter dresses with tights: if you’d like to pack some dresses for the day or to go out at night I recommend taking knit dresses with pairs of thick tights.

Footwear

  • Waterproof Walking Shoes: While it’s not as much as in Rome or Paris, there are still a lot of cobblestones in Dublin so you will need comfortable sneakers to walk around. I highly recommend taking a pair of sneakers that are somewhat waterproof and not in fabric (yes, looking at you Converse), because it will rain at some point and you don’t want to walk around with wet feet.
  • Ankle Boots: A stylish pair of flat ankle boots will protect you from the rain and keep you looking chic. They can easily be paired with trousers or dresses.
  • Knee-high boots: flat boots are also a great footwear, especially if you are planning on wearing dresses. They are also more stylish which makes them the ideal shoes to wear in the evening.

Bags

  • Water-Resistant Backpack or Crossbody Bag: Choose something lightweight yet waterproof (like leather) to carry your essentials while exploring the city.
  • Money Belt: While Dublin is generally safe, wearing a money belt under your coat can help keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded tourist spots. Even if there aren’t many pickpockets, you’re more likely to forget your handbag somewhere than you would be to lose your money belt.
  • Suitcase or travel backpack: depending on the length of your stay that can be a check in luggage or a carry on.

Accessories

  • Compact Umbrella: A small, windproof umbrella is a must for Dublin’s rainy days.
  • Beanie: The wind can be biting so a cozy hat will help keep you warm.
  • Scarf: it will keep you warm and can add some style to your outfit
  • Gloves
  • Travel-Size Hand Sanitizer: Perfect for keeping clean on the go, especially when visiting busy areas.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: You can drink water from the tap in Dublin so taking a reusable bottle of water will be more economical and eco-friendly.

Electronics

  • Phone & Charger
  • Power Bank: You’ll likely be using your phone for navigation and photos, so it’s handy to have extra battery power.
  • Camera
  • International Adapter: Ireland uses Type G outlets, so bring an adapter if needed. I usually recommend getting an international adapter because you can use it everywhere but otherwise, if you had one for the UK, they will work as well.

Paperwork

  • Passport & Visa if needed
  • Travel Insurance Documents
  • Hotel Reservation & Itinerary
  • Bank Card & Travel Money Card: Cards like Revolut or Wise are great for avoiding high fees on currency exchange.

What to Wear in Dublin in November Depending on the Weather

☀️ If it’s sunny

Wear a long-sleeve top under a cozy sweater, paired with jeans or trousers, and a warm jacket. Add comfortable waterproof sneakers.

☁️ If it’s cloudy

Layer up with a knit sweater over a long-sleeve shirt, along with thermal leggings under your jeans or trousers. Complete the look with waterproof boots and a scarf to keep you warm.

🌧️ If it rains

A waterproof coat is essential, along with waterproof shoes or ankle boots. Layer with a sweater, and don’t forget your compact umbrella and hat!

Things Not to Wear in Dublin in November

  • Shorts: It’s way too cold for shorts in Dublin in November.
  • Heels: With cobblestone streets and lots of walking, it’s best to leave your heels at home but of course, if you are planning a night out and would like to wear high heels boots anyway you can. Just remember that it might not be the best.
  • Light, Non-Waterproof Shoes: You’ll likely encounter rain, so opt for waterproof footwear.
  • Overly Casual Clothes: While Dubliners are fairly laid-back, avoid wearing sweatpants unless you’re staying in. Dressing smart-casual will help you blend in better with the locals.
