Planning a trip to St. Petersburg, Florida and wondering what you should pack? I’m here to help!
St Pete is one of my favorite places in Florida, I’ve lived there for a while and it’s such a great destination for a vacation.
Known for its stunning Gulf Coast beaches, art scene, and laid-back coastal vibe, St. Pete is a fantastic year-round destination.
You get to enjoy the Florida sunshine and some of the most beautiful beaches in North America, what else can we ask for?
St. Pete enjoys warm, tropical weather for most of the year, but what you’ll pack may vary depending on the season.
I’ll guide you through what to wear and bring, whether you’re visiting during the warmer months or in cooler weather.
What is the Weather Like in St. Pete, Florida?

St. Pete’s weather is generally warm to hot year-round, with the summer months (June to September) bringing higher humidity and more rain, and the winter months (December to February) offering cooler but still warm conditions.
- Summer (June to September): It’s hot and humid. Temperatures range from 25°C to 32°C (77°F to 90°F), with high humidity and occasional afternoon rain showers.
- Fall (October to November): Temperatures cool slightly, with highs around 24°C to 29°C (75°F to 84°F).
- Winter (December to February): Cooler but still very warm, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 24°C (59°F to 75°F), but still mild and comfortable.
- Spring (March to May): Beautiful and warm, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C (68°F to 82°F), perfect for beach and outdoor activities.
Please bear in mind that the hurricane season is from June to the end of October which means there are higher chances of rain during that time. It’s also a lot more humid which is less comfortable.
Essential Packing List for St. Pete, Florida
Packing for a trip to St Pete is fairly easy because you don’t need too many layers however, since there are a lot of activities you can do in the area, there are quite a few accessories that could come in handy.
Clothing
- Lightweight Dresses: Flowy sundresses and maxi dresses are perfect for strolling through downtown or wearing over your swimsuit when heading to the beach. You can also opt for shorter or tighter ones, especially if you are going out in the evening.
- Shorts and T-shirts: Casual shorts and lightweight t-shirts or tank tops are ideal for daytime activities, especially if you are planning on doing some day trips to places like the springs for example. Breathable fabrics like cotton or linen will keep you comfortable.
- Short jumpsuits: These are ideal if you like the idea of wearing shorts while still having the style of a dress. Jumpsuits are super practical in the way that they are only one piece of clothing but make for the entire outfit. For the day, opt for short ones but if you want to look a bit more classy in the evening, trouser jumpsuits will be ideal.
- Casual Pants or Jeans: Lightweight pants, such as linen or cotton trousers, are perfect for evening dining or cooler days. Jeans are very practical as well if you are visiting in winter. While St Pete never gets that cold, it’s still cooler between December and February and jeans can be appreciated. If you’re visiting in summer though, lighter fabrics are recommended.
- Tank Tops and Blouses: Lightweight tank tops, sleeveless tops, or blouses are great for warm afternoons. Opt for moisture-wicking materials if you’re visiting during the hotter months.
- Light Sweater or Jacket: Evenings in St. Pete, especially in the winter months, can be cooler, so pack a light sweater, cardigan, and jacket for layering if you’re out in the evening. Besides in January where you might need a thicker one (and by that, I don’t mean actually thick), a jean jacket will be more than enough.
- Swimwear: You’ll be spending time on the beautiful beaches, so pack your swimsuit! Bring at least two swimsuits so you always have a dry one.
- Beach Cover-Ups: A lightweight cover-up or kaftan is useful when transitioning from the beach to a restaurant or beachside bar.
- Rain Jacket (Optional): If you’re visiting in the summer months, a packable rain jacket or poncho can come in handy for those brief but heavy afternoon showers.
Footwear
- Comfortable Sandals: St. Pete is casual and beachy, so pack comfortable sandals to explore downtown and go to the beach. I recommend getting water friendly ones like Teva because they are very comfortable and water resistant.
- Sneakers: There are quite a few sights that you can visit in St Pete so having comfortable sneakers will be very handy, especially if you plan a lot of time in the museums,
- Dressy Sandals: Perfect for outings and a bit more stylish.
- Open Toe Heels: For dining out or enjoying nightlife, a pair of stylish but comfortable heels can work well for evening wear. You will be driving to most places in St Pete so you won’t have to walk at night all that much. For this reason, I think a cute pair of heels is something you should take.
- Flip flops: like for any beach destination, a pair of flip flops is simply essential. You’ll use them a lot to go to the beach or swimming pool.
- Water Shoes: there are a lot of water activities you can do in and near St. Pete includes kayaking, SUP and more. For this reason, I recommend taking a pair of water shoes. I know they are not exactly the most good-looking shoes but they are incredibly practical.
Bags
- Beach Bag or Tote: A large, reusable beach bag is great for carrying towels, sunscreen, snacks, and anything else you’ll need for a day by the water.
- Crossbody Bag or Daypack: Perfect to carry your essentials while exploring.
- Evening purse: You will be going out a lot in St. Pete because it’s such a lively city and there are loads of bars, concert venues and more so it’s always nice to have an evening purse that is a bit more stylish to go out.
Accessories
- Sunglasses: Sunglasses are a must for protecting your eyes from the strong Florida sun. Polarized lenses are especially good.
- Wide-Brimmed Hat or a baseball cap.
- Sunscreen with high SPF
- Reusable Water Bottle: It’s important to stay hydrated, especially if you’re out in the heat. Carry a reusable water bottle to refill as needed.
- Beach Towel or Sarong: ideally a quick dry one
- A Beach Poncho: this very practical if you need to quickly change and to dry after a swim.
Electronics
- Phone & Charger
- Portable Power Bank
- Waterproof Phone Case: If you’re going to the beach or doing water activities, a waterproof case will protect your phone from sand and water.
- GoPro: With all the water activities available, having a GoPro is very practical.
