What is the Weather Like in England in December?

December in England is cold, with temperatures ranging from 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) in most parts of the country.

You can expect short days, frequent rain, and the occasional frost, especially in the mornings.

Snow is possible but actually quite rare, though it tends to happen more in northern England or rural areas.

While the cold and damp can make it feel even chillier, the festive atmosphere more than makes up for it.

To make the most of your trip, be sure to check the forecast right before you go and plan for layers!

Also, please remember that different parts of the country experience different weather.

Northern England is always colder and you will need to pack extra layers if you are planning to go to Manchester, Peak District, New Castle or Northumberland.

The south, on the other hand, tends to experience better weather so places like Cornwall, the Cotswolds, Devon and Dorset are less cold (but don’t get me wrong, it’s still very much chilly).

Essential Packing List for England in December

Here’s a complete packing list to help you prepare for England’s winter weather. Don’t forget to adapt it to your own style.

Clothing

  • Warm, Waterproof Winter Coat: This is the most important item you’ll need. A coat that’s both insulated and waterproof will keep you warm and dry, whether you’re wandering through Christmas markets or braving an unexpected downpour. Technically, you can also opt for a wool coat. It’s a lot more stylish but since it’s not waterproof you need to make sure you are carrying around a good umbrella.
  • Knit Sweaters: These are perfect for layering and keeping you warm. Choose a few neutral colors or festive patterns that will pair easily with the rest of your clothes.
  • Turtleneck sweaters: These are also practical because they protect your neck from the wind and keep you warm.
  • Long-Sleeve Tops & Shirts: Great for layering under sweaters or wearing indoors when you’re enjoying a warm drink at a café.
  • Tank tops and bodysuits: These are the perfect first layer. They will keep you extra warm. Also if you wear one of these, you can opt for a nice long sleeve blouse on top which is a bit more stylish.
  • Trousers or Jeans: Opt for thicker fabrics like wool or denim. Dark-colored jeans or warm trousers are practical, can easily be paired with anything and are stylish enough for evening outings.
  • Thermal Leggings or Tights: Perfect for layering under trousers on particularly cold days or for wearing under dresses or skirts with thick tights.
  • Fluffy leggings: These are very practical if you are going on hikes in national parks such as the Peak District. They are extra warm and look good.
  • Knit Dresses: If you like to dress up, a cozy knit dress paired with thick tights and boots will keep you warm and stylish, especially for a nice dinner or a night out.

Footwear

  • High Knee Boots (flat): These are ideal to keep you warm and as long as they are flat, they should be very comfortable to walk on cobblestones. You can pair them with a dress or trousers.
  • Ankle boots: Another popular option in England in December since they are both stylish and practical.
  • Comfortable Sneakers or Walking Shoes: Opt for something waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Waterproof hiking shoes (if planning on hiking): If you stick to cities, these won’t be necessary but if you’re planning on going to Yorkshire, the national parks or anywhere where you might explore the outdoors, they will come in jandy.

Bags

  • A suitcase with all your clothes and belongings.
  • Crossbody Bag or Backpack: Choose a bag that’s secure and weather-resistant. A small backpack or crossbody bag with zippers will be convenient for carrying essentials as you explore.
  • Waterproof Tote Bag: If you plan on doing any holiday shopping, a waterproof tote will be useful for carrying your purchases and any extra layers. It’s also practical when you go to a Christmas market.

Accessories

  • Umbrella: A sturdy, windproof umbrella is a must for December in England. Opt for a compact one that can fit in your bag easily.
  • Wool Socks: These will help keep your feet warm, especially when paired with boots. Bring a few thick pairs for the colder days.
  • Leg warmers: Although not necessary per se, these can be very practical especially if you’re wearing dresses and ankle boots.
  • Beanie or Hat: A warm hat is essential to protect against the cold and wind.
  • Scarf: Bring a thick scarf to keep your neck warm.
  • Gloves: Choose a pair that’s insulated and waterproof to keep your hands warm and dry. Touchscreen-compatible gloves are handy for using your phone without taking them off.

Electronics

  • Phone & Charger
  • Portable Charger (Power Bank)
  • Camera
  • International Adapter: England uses Type G outlets, so bring an adapter if you’re coming from outside the UK or Ireland.

Paperwork

  • Passport & Visa (if required)
  • Travel Insurance
  • Hotel Reservations
  • Bank Cards & Cash: England is very card-friendly, but it’s a good idea to carry some British pounds (GBP) in cash for smaller purchases or for the Christmas market. I also recommend using Revolut or Wise to save money on currency exchange.

PRO TIP: Make sure you have a contactless card since they are used a lot for public transport here.

What to Wear in England in December Depending on the Weather

☀️ If It’s Sunny
Sunny days in December are still cold, so layer up with a thermal top, a knit sweater, and a warm jacket. Pair with jeans or trousers and comfortable walking shoes or boots.

☁️ If It’s Cloudy
Layer a long-sleeve top under a thick sweater, and don’t forget a scarf and gloves. Waterproof boots and a cozy beanie will keep you warm, especially with England’s winter wind.

🌧️ If It Rains
A waterproof coat is essential on rainy days, along with waterproof boots and an umbrella. Layer a thermal top under your sweater for extra warmth, and don’t forget to wear gloves and a hat.

Things Not to Wear in England in December

  • Flip-flops or Open-toed Shoes: It’s way, way too cold.
  • High Heels: If you are planning a night out in London or Manchester then you can take a pair of heeled boots but otherwise, there is no need really.
  • Light Clothing: It’s best to leave summer clothes behind. Stick to warm, layered outfits.
  • Heavy, Non-waterproof Shoes: Non-waterproof footwear will get soaked in the rain, so make sure your shoes can handle wet conditions.

With this packing list and insider tips, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your December trip to England, no matter what the weather brings!
