Hope Cove in Devon is one of those places that just sticks with you – with its quaint charm, beautiful beaches, and that cosy village vibe, it’s the perfect escape for a relaxing holiday in the south west.
It’s also a place that brings a lot of memories since a lot of us used to go on holidays there as a child (or later on).
But, if you’re like me and always on the lookout for new places to discover, you’re in luck!
The UK is dotted with villages that share that same magical quality as Hope Cove. Here are five of them that you absolutely must add to your travel list.
1. Appledore, North Devon
Let’s start with another cute seaside village in Devon but this time we are heading north, to Appledore, near Westward Ho!.
Nestled at the point where the River Torridge meets the River Taw, Appledore is a stunning fishing village that’s as picturesque as they come.
With its maritime history, colourful fishermen’s cottages, and narrow winding streets, it’s got charm in spades.
Make sure to go down Meeting Street since it’s particularly pretty and you get a good view of the estuary.
This will bring you to Appledore Quay which is a fantastic promenade and you can get one of the delicious Dave Hockings ice creams!
2. Plockton, Scotland
Plockton is a hidden gem on the west coast of Scotland. It was nicknamed ‘the jewel of the Highlands’ and is as picturesque as it gets!
It looks like it’s straight out of a painting, with its cute harbour, tranquil waters and stunning Highland backdrop. It’s the perfect spot for kayaking, sailing, or just enjoying a quiet pint with a view.
There are also several boat trips available if you want to discover the wildlife. You can see dolphins and seals on Loch Carron which is so nice!
3. Staithes, North Yorkshire
Located in North Yorkshire, Staithes is one of these fairytale seaside villages with stunning cobbled streets and 18th century cottages clinging to a steep hillside.
With narrow alleys and a small harbour, it’s like stepping back in time.
It’s known for its maritime heritage since a lot of seamen from Staithes became famous captains back in the days.
But the person it’s most associated with is Captain Cook who did his apprenticeship here in the 18th century.
All in all, Staithes is a great destination if you are looking for a peaceful village with a harbour and some history.
4. Clovelly, North Devon
Back in North Devon, Clovelly is unlike any other village in the UK.
It’s a Victorian village on the cliffs that will make you feel like you are in France!
It’s privately owned which means there is an entrance fee but it’s well worth it. No cars, cobbled streets, beautiful harbour and cute shops… that’s what you should expect to find here.
The walk down to the harbour is particularly pretty and you get incredible views of the Devon coastline.
5. Port Isaac, Cornwall
Last but certainly not least, Port Isaac in Cornwall is a must-visit. If you think it looks familiar, you’re probably a fan of the TV show “Doc Martin” which was filmed here.
This fishing village in Cornwall is everything you’d want from a coastal escape – steeped in history, with local culture, great food and stunning views of the Atlantic.
The narrow streets and fisherman’s cottages are picture-perfect, and the seafood? Simply divine.
