If you’ve ever been to a pumpkin patch in Florida, you might have noticed that they are usually not directly grown on site.
This is because the climate in Florida is not exactly the best to grow this kind of crop.
Well, while it’s true that growing pumpkins in Florida is no easy task, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible!
Located in Dunnellon, Cannon Farms is grows its own pumpkins right there in the field.
That means you walk out into the patch, pick the one you want and cut it straight off the vine, which is almost unheard of down here.
And the best part about it is that this year the patch is open Tuesday to Sunday, so you don’t have to fight the weekend crowds!
It makes for a great day out from Orlando (about 1 hour 25 minutes) or Tampa (about 1 hour 45 minutes).

🎃 What is it?
A 5th generation family farm that has been worked by the same family since 1909, and one of the very few places in Florida where the pumpkins are actually grown on site.
Florida is not the ideal place to grow pumpkins. The heat, the humidity and the heavy rain all work against them. That’s why hardly anybody bothers, and why almost every patch in the state sells pumpkins brought in from elsewhere. 🌱
Here you get to walk around the field and cut your own. There are eight varieties including classic jack-o’-lanterns. 🧡
But that’s not all! There’s a petting zoo too, with Highland cows, pigs, ducks and goats.🐄
Sunflowers are available for picking from the week of September 22nd, and they cut trails through 30 plus acres of them. There are zinnias and cosmos as well. 🌻
Admission also gets you the kids’ play area and the photo spots, and on Saturdays and Sundays a wagon ride through the fields. 🚜
The produce stand is separate and free to visit, with sweet corn at $1 an ear, cantaloupes at $5 and local honey, sourdough and preserves. 🌽
📅 Season: Pumpkin picking runs September 26th through November 1st, while supplies last

💰 Pumpkins are extra: Pumpkins are not included in your admission. They’re priced by size starting at $5, and there’s a sizing guide at the farm

👕 What to wear: Closed toe shoes. You’re walking through real working fields, so the ground can be uneven, sandy, muddy or wet depending on the weather
🛒 Bring if you can: They have a limited number of wagons and clippers to borrow, so bring your own if you have them
📸 After hours photography: Available Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at $50 per session
⚠️ Worth knowing: No advance tickets needed, you just pay when you arrive, and they take cash and cards. No pets allowed. If the weather turns, they close the fields for safety.
