Edinburgh is one of the most magical cities in Europe and there are always plenty of things to do all year round.
While it’s true that January is the low season in Edinburgh (mainly because of the fact that it’s cold), I still find it to be a great time of the year to visit because it’s not as crowded and you get to interact with the locals more.
In terms of clothes, don’t worry you don’t need any niche equipment or anything of the kind but you will need layers.
In this article, I will tell you everything you need to pack your suitcase for a trip to Edinburgh in January. This includes recommendations of things to wear but also outfit ideas.

What is the Weather Like in Edinburgh in January?
January in Edinburgh is typically cold and damp, with average temperatures ranging from 1°C to 7°C (34°F to 45°F).
Snow isn’t that common, but rain and strong winds are frequent, so waterproof and windproof layers are essential.
It’s also important to note that days are short. Scotland is a lot further up North than most people realise and there are only around seven hours of daylight at this time of the year.
That having been said though, Edinburgh is still a magical destination at this time of the year and the winter weather is definitely part of the charm.
Essential Packing List for Edinburgh in January
You can find below my packing list for Edinburgh in January. Please bear in mind that you’ll need to adapt it to your own style.
Clothing
- Warm, Waterproof Coat: This is the most important piece of clothing you’ll need in Edinburgh in winter. Make sure to take a heavy, insulated coat that’s waterproof or water-resistant. A parka or down jacket with a hood is ideal because it stops the wind and the hood protects you a lot.
- Thermal Layers: Pack thermal tops like merino wool t-shirts to keep yourself warm.
- Knit Sweaters: I recommend thick woolen sweaters because they keep you warm and are easy to pair with anything.
- Long-Sleeve Tops
- Jeans and Trousers: Choose thicker, warmer jeans or wool trousers. If you’re particularly cold-sensitive, consider wearing tights underneath.
- Fleece-lined leggings: These are so practical in the cold weather. They keep you so warm it’s amazing! I particularly recommend them for Edinburgh because locals are more relaxed than in other parts of Europe when it comes to fashion so you can definitely opt for the practical choice.
- Wool Dresses with Tights: if you’d like to dress up a bit in the evening, you can opt for a winter dress with thick tights. I usually wear a bodysuit or tank top tucked into my tights for extra layer and warmth.
Shoes
- Knee High Boots: they will keep your feet and legs warm. Make sure they are flat since Edinburgh is full of cobblestoned streets but with a thick sole so it doesn’t hurt your feet.
- Warm Sneakers: they are also ideal for Edinburgh in winter but you need to make sure that they are waterproof or at least somewhat water resistant. Shoes like Converse or Vans are not really suitable.
- Ankle Boots: These are also very practical because you can wear them with any outfit and they are very comfortable. Opt for flats such as Chelsea boots.
Bags
- Handbag, Crossbody Bag or Backpack for daytime activities.
Accessories
- Scarf: Opt for a thick scarf that you can wrap around your neck or even use as a pashmina for extra layers.
- Hat: the best way to stay warm is to wear a hat since most of the body heat leaves via the head. It also protects you from the wind, especially your ears. If you don’t like wearing hats, you can also opt for earmuffs or a headband.
- Gloves: this is essential because it is very cold and you need to protect your hand. I recommend getting touchscreen gloves though that way you can keep taking photos without having to take them out.
- Umbrella: This is essential. It rains a lot and often in Edinburgh so it’s useful to have an umbrella with you at all times.
- Thermal Socks: Cobblestones are very cold so it’s important to have warm socks. Nothing worse than having cold feet!
Electronics
- Phone and Charger
- Power Bank
- Camera
- UK Power Adapter: Scotland is part of the UK and uses Type G plugs, so don’t forget an adapter.
Paperwork
- Passport
- Travel Insurance
- Hotel and Activity Reservations
- Bank card and cash: Consider getting a Revolut or Wise card to save on exchange fees.
- E-sim: You will need the internet while exploring Edinburgh. I mean, technically you don’t need it per se but it’s very practical if you have it as you can use Google Maps and search for everything you may need.
What to Wear Depending on the Weather
☀️ Clear and Sunny Days
Wear a long-sleeve thermal top, a cozy sweater, and a warm coat. Pair with jeans and ankle boots. Add a scarf, hat, and gloves to stay extra warm.
☁️ Cloudy and Overcast Days
Layer up with a thermal base, knit sweater, and warm coat. Pair with thick trousers or fleece-lined leggings. For shoes, opt for ankle boots or waterproof sneakers.
🌧️ Rainy Days
Wear a waterproof insulated coat over your layers and pair it with waterproof knee high boots. Keep a compact umbrella handy.
Things Not to Wear in Edinburgh in January
- Thin, Non-Waterproof Shoes: No matter what, you can be sure of one thing in Edinburgh, it will rain so make sure your shoes are waterproof. There is nothing worse than cold wet feet.
- Shorts or Skirts Without Layers: January is far too cold for bare legs, so avoid shorts or skirts unless paired with thick tights or leggings.
- Heels: Heels aren’t ideal for Edinburgh’s cobbled streets.
- Light Layers: Edinburgh’s January weather requires thicker layers, so skip thin or lightweight clothing unless it’s as an underlayer.
