What is the weather like in Cancun
- December to April (Dry Season): This is considered to be the best time to visit Cancun in terms of weather, as the weather is warm and sunny with lower humidity. Temperatures typically range from 20°C to 28°C (68°F to 82°F). Rain is rare during these months, and you’ll enjoy plenty of sunshine, making it perfect for beach days and outdoor activities. Nights are cooler but still pleasantly warm.
- May to August (Transition to Wet Season): These months start to feel hotter, with temperatures climbing to 26°C to 32°C (79°F to 90°F) and higher humidity. The wet season begins toward the end of May, so you can expect more frequent showers, though they are often short and don’t usually disrupt plans. Days are generally hot, and this is a good time to stay near the beach or pool to cool off.
- September to November (Rainy & Hurricane Season): This is the most humid and rainy period, with a higher chance of tropical storms or hurricanes, especially in September and October. Temperatures hover around 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F), and while there’s a good amount of rain, showers often come in bursts with clear skies afterward. It’s also a quieter time in Cancun, so you can find fewer crowds and cheaper deals, but it’s important to stay updated on weather forecasts during hurricane season.
Year-Round Tips: No matter when you visit, Cancun is generally warm and sunny, but packing for both heat and potential rain is smart if you’re heading there during the rain season.
Lightweight, breathable clothing is essential throughout the year, and in the rainy season, you’ll want to include a light rain jacket or poncho.
Sunscreen is a must no matter the month, as the sun is strong year-round but please note that a lot of cenotes don’t allow sunscreen so a rashguard is also a good idea.
Essential Packing List for Cancun
You can find below my ultimate packing list for a trip to Cancun.
Obviously, we all have different styles so you will need to tweak it a little to make it yours.
Clothing
- Swimsuits (2-3): You’ll spend a lot of time in the water, so pack a few swimsuits. Consider bringing a mix of bikinis and one-piece suits so you can vary the styles and get more beautiful photos.
- Cover-ups or sarongs: These are great for transitioning from the beach or pool to a café or bar.
- Light dresses: Flowy, lightweight sundresses are perfect for beach days. I recommend ‘short’ ones for the day since it’s more comfortable.
- Maxi dresses: These can also be worn during the day but they are better in the evening since they give that classy and boho look.
- Tank tops & t-shirts: Breathable and moisture-wicking materials like cotton to avoid sweating. You should pack a few basics so you can easily pair them with shorts or skirts but also some patterned ones to give a bit of colour. Cancun is a tropical destination after all so you don’t have to stick to neutral colours.
- Shorts: Pack a few pairs of comfortable shorts (denim and cotton) for daytime adventures. They are perfect if you are visiting Chichen Itza or going to some of the cenotes. Also, they go with everything so it’s very easy to pair with any top.
- Surfing shorts: Though you won’t be surfing in Cancun, I highly recommend taking a pair of swimming shorts because they are incredibly practical. They are very comfortable and dry quickly. They will come in handy if you go on a boat tour or snorkelling. More importantly, they are perfect if you are going to theme parks like Xplor because you can do all the activities while wearing them. They dry quickly and don’t need to change all the time.
- Rompers: These are incredibly practical as well because it’s only one piece of clothing but it makes for a full outfit. Also, they are so cute! Make sure you take a comfortable one that is easy to take off (this can be a pain when you go to the toilets).
- Lightweight cardigan: Most of the time, you won’t need layers in Mexico but some evenings can be windier so having a light cardigan that you can wear will come in handy.
- Light rain jacket: If you are visiting during the rainy season, you should consider taking a lightweight rain jacket. A poncho is also a good option. Just make sure it’s not too bulky and warm because even when it rains, it’s still quite hot.
Footwear
- Flip flops: These are essential for beach and pool days.
- Comfortable sandals: You will be walking quite a bit some days if you decide to go to the cenotes or Mayan ruins. I recommend wearing comfortable sandals that you can wear during the day. If they are waterproof, that’s even better!
- Dressy sandals: You will want to go out in the evening so it’s good to have a pair of stylish sandals. I also tend to recommend comfortable flat ones and but depending on your plans, a pair of wedges could also be a good idea.
- Water shoes: This is optional but I really recommend it since you will be doing a lot of water activities and they really come in handy. You won’t need them if you go to the beach but if you’re planning on doing a boat trip or going to the cenotes, it will be so practical!
Bags
- Beach tote: A large tote or beach bag for all your essentials like sunscreen, water, and a towel.
- A backpack: For day trips, a small backpack is ideal because you will need to carry some belongings and a bottle of water.
Accessories
- Sunglasses: Bring a pair (or two) of sunglasses since you will be using them all day long.
- Waterproof phone pouch: Great for storing your phone and valuables when you’re near the water or if you want to use your camera underwater.
- Sun Hat or cap: This is super important because the sun is very strong in Mexico and it will reduce the risk of having a sun stroke.
- Quick dry towel: a microfiber towel is ideal for beach and pool days. It’s very light and of course dries quickly.
- A microfiber poncho: this is my favourite accessory in tropical destinations because you can use it to put your swimming costume on and dry quickly.
Electronics
- Phone & charger
- Power bank: Chances are that you’ll be using your phone a lot so having a portable power bank is useful.
- Portable speaker (optional)
- GoPro: You’ll spend so much time in the water that it’s definitely worth having a GoPro. If you want to do any kind of boat trip or snorkeling, you will be happy to have it. Remember, there are a lot of opportunities to see turtles near Cancun!
Toiletries
- Sunscreen: Cancun’s sun is strong so you will need sunscreen but opt for an eco-friendly one since most cenotes and a lot of other places don’t allow regular sunscreen.
- Aloe vera gel: In case you get too much sun, aloe will soothe your skin.
- Insect repellent: Especially for evening outings near jungle areas or cenotes.
- Moisturizer: The sun and salt water can dry out your skin, so a hydrating lotion is essential.
- Lip balm with SPF: Protect your lips from the sun as well.
Paperwork
- Passport
- Travel insurance
- Credit card & cash: A lot of places accept cards but it’s a lot easier if you have cash. I personally use a Revolut card and then
What to Wear in Cancun Depending on the Weather
☀️ If it’s sunny ☀️
On sunny days, you’ll want to stick to light, breathable clothes like tank tops, shorts, and flowy dresses. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are essential for sun protection. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
🌧️ If it rains 🌧️
Tropical showers don’t usually last long, but a light rain jacket or poncho can come in handy if you’re out during a quick downpour. Waterproof sandals or flip-flops are useful as well.
🎉 For a night out 🎉
Cancun’s nightlife is amazing so you’ll want to go out a lot. You can opt for a maxi dress or jumpsuit paired with stylish sandals or wedges.
