Plus, there are loads of Christmas festivities, markets and more to see!
In this guide, I’ll walk you through what to expect in terms of weather and will give you my ultimate packing list so you know exactly what to wear in Barcelona in December.

What is the Weather Like in Barcelona in December?
December in Barcelona is cool but mild compared to other parts of Europe.
Daytime temperatures generally range from 8°C to 15°C (46°F to 59°F), while evenings can get chillier, dipping down to around 5°C (41°F).
Rain is relatively rare which is also great but of course, showers are still possible.
You can expect a mix of sunny and cloudy days, with lots of sunshine compared to northern Europe.
Barcelona’s winter is more about layering than bundling up for extreme cold, so smart packing will keep you comfortable while exploring the city.
Essential Packing List for Barcelona in December
You can find below my packing list for Barcelona in December. As a general thing, you will need to take a few layers.
Unlike other destinations, layering here is not really about building up the warmth but just being able to peel off or add a layer when the temperature goes up or down.
Clothing
- Medium-Weight Coat: A medium-weight coat or jacket is essential for December. Opt for something that’s warm but not too bulky, like a wool coat, leather jacket, or insulated parka. You can also opt for a borg coat which can be cosy and stylish. It’s not waterproof but since December in Barcelona is quite dry anyway that shouldn’t be an issue.
- Sweaters or Cardigans: Perfect for layering, pack a few sweaters or cardigans. Wool or cashmere options will keep you warm without being too heavy.
- Long-Sleeve Tops: Long-sleeve shirts or blouses are excellent for daytime wear. You can easily layer them under sweaters or jackets when it gets cooler.
- T-shirts and Blouses: For the warmer afternoons, pack a couple of t-shirts or lighter blouses. You can wear these under a cardigan or jacket when needed.
- Jeans or Trousers: Comfortable jeans or trousers are ideal for walking around the city. Dark trousers work well for both day and evening activities since you can pair them with anything.
- Skirts or Dresses : If you prefer dresses or skirts, bring along a couple of options that can be paired with tights. Since it’s not overly cold, you don’t need to take tights that are too thick, they can even be a bit see through but I would still recommend black ones.
- Pyjamas
- Underwear
Footwear
- Comfortable Sneakers: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so a good pair of comfortable, stylish sneakers is essential. Ideally, make sure they have quite a thick sole because there are a lot of cobblestones in Barcelona.
- Ankle Boots: A stylish pair of ankle boots is also perfect because they are comfortable to walk in during the day and are very stylish as well. If you are planning on going out, they will be ideal.
Bags
- Crossbody Bag to carry your essentials.
- Tote Bag: A reusable tote bag is great for shopping at Christmas markets or carrying extra layers as the temperatures change throughout the day.
- A money belt: this is a must-have in Barcelona. Unfortunately the city is full of pickpockets so having a money belt will keep your valuables safe.
Accessories
- Scarf: A cozy scarf will keep you warm on cooler days and adds a stylish layer to your outfit.
- Beanie or Hat: While Barcelona doesn’t get extremely cold, a light beanie or hat can be useful for chillier evenings, especially near the waterfront where it can feel colder.
- Gloves: Lightweight gloves are a good idea for early mornings or late evenings when the temperatures drop.
- Sunglasses: Barcelona enjoys plenty of sunshine, even in December, so don’t forget your sunglasses.
Electronics
- Phone & Charger
- Camera
- Power Bank
- International Power Adapter: Spain uses Type C and F outlets, so make sure you bring an adapter if needed.
Paperwork
- Passport & Visa (if required)
- Travel Insurance
- Hotel Reservations & Itinerary
- Bank Card & Cash: I recommend getting a Revolut or Wise card to save money on currency exchange. Also, having some euros in cash will come in very handy.
What to Wear in Barcelona in December Depending on the Weather
☀️ If It’s Sunny
For sunny days, wear a t-shirt or light blouse layered under a sweater, with jeans or trousers. A medium-weight jacket will be enough for cooler mornings and evenings. Don’t forget your sunglasses!
☁️ If It’s Cloudy
Layer a long-sleeve top under a sweater or cardigan, and bring a scarf for added warmth. A slightly warmer jacket, like a wool coat, is a good option. Comfortable boots and a beanie will help keep you warm without overheating.
🌧️ If It Rains
Though December doesn’t see much rain, it’s smart to be prepared. An umbrella, coat and waterproof shoes are ideal for rainy days.
Things Not to Wear in Barcelona in December
- Heavy Winter Coats: Barcelona’s winter is mild, so you won’t need a heavy coat like you would in Northern Europe. Make sure you have a good wool coat and take some extra layers if needed but there is no need for a coat that would be too bulky.
- Open-Toed Shoes or Sandals: While the temperatures are mild, it’s not warm enough for open-toed shoes or sandals. Stick to closed-toe options like boots or sneakers.
- Bulky Layers: Since the weather in Barcelona can fluctuate between cool and warm, bulky layers will make you uncomfortable as you move between indoor and outdoor spaces. Opt for lightweight, layerable clothing instead.
