Connecticut might be one of the smallest states in America, but it’s blessed with a gorgeous stretch of coastline, making it one of the best places to visit if you love seaside vibes!
It’s dotted with beaches, harbors, lighthouses and some of the most charming seaside towns in New England.
I explored a big chunk of the Connecticut shoreline on my New England road trip and loved how each town has its own distinct personality, from lively maritime hubs to cute fishing villages.
Here are 10 of the most beautiful seaside towns in Connecticut.
⚓ 1. Mystic
Mystic is the crown jewel of the Connecticut coast, and it completely won me over.
It’s a lively riverside town steeped in maritime history, and I’d describe it as a bit like the Key West of Connecticut.
There is plenty you can do in Mystic so I would recommend spending a weekend there (but if you only have one day, I’ve got an itinerary for you!).
Make sure to visit the Mystic Aquarium and the Mystic Seaport Museum, the largest maritime museum in the United States.
The Olde Mistick Village is ideal if you love shopping.
Finally, head downtown to watch the historic Bascule Bridge lift for passing boats, then wander the waterfront for seafood and ice cream.
Don’t miss the Mystic Pizza which was featured in the famous Julia Roberts comedy.
🐚 2. Old Saybrook
Old Saybrook sits right where the Connecticut River flows into Long Island Sound, giving it a wonderful maritime setting and a laid-back shoreline feel.
Start with a coffee at the charming Ashlawn Farm Coffee, set in an old farmhouse.
Then head to Main Street where you’ll find a lot of antique shops and other independent shops.
After that, drive down to Saybrook Point for lovely water views and a walk around Fort Saybrook Monument Park.
Fun fact: Old Saybrook was the longtime home of Hollywood legend Katharine Hepburn.
It’s a relaxed, pretty spot for a waterfront meal and a stroll.
📖 3. Niantic
Niantic, in the town of East Lyme, is a laid-back seaside village with a real community feel.
Its highlight is the lovely 1.1-mile boardwalk that runs right along the Sound, perfect for a gentle stroll with the sea breeze.
Book lovers absolutely must visit the Book Barn, a wonderfully rambling second-hand bookshop spread across several buildings and gardens.
Add in sandy beaches and a cute village center, and Niantic is a delightful, low-key coastal stop.
⛵ 4. Milford
Milford blends small-town charm with a genuinely lovely coastline.
You can walk downtown, there are a few cute independent shops. Also, there are quite a few places to get food.
We had breakfast at the Cafe Atlantique and it was one of the highlights of the trip!
You can also walk around the pretty harbor at Milford Landing Marina. It’s a very peaceful place.
But the real draw is the beaches. Head to Walnut Beach or Silver Sands State Park, where, at low tide, a natural sandbar (a tombolo) appears and lets you walk out to Charles Island.
Just keep an eye on the tides, as they come in fast!
🏖️ 5. Madison
If it’s beaches you’re after, Madison is your town.
It’s home to Hammonasset Beach State Park, Connecticut’s largest shoreline park, with two miles of gorgeous sandy beach, a boardwalk and beautiful sunsets.
The town itself is lovely too, with a classic New England Main Street, independent shops and the wonderful R.J. Julia Booksellers, one of the best independent bookstores in the state.
It’s the perfect spot for a proper beach day followed by a browse.
🚣 6. Rowayton
Tucked into Norwalk along the Five Mile River, Rowayton is a peaceful little seaside village that feels like a hidden gem.
There isn’t a long list of attractions here, and that’s exactly its charm.
Stroll along the river admiring the waterfront homes and bobbing boats, grab some fresh seafood, and soak up the calm coastal atmosphere.
Bayley Beach is also a lovely spot.
Basically, it’s the perfect place to slow right down!
I personally visited after spending the day in New Canaan and it was just perfect. The sunset was amazing!
🎣 7. Stonington
Right in the southeastern corner of the state, Stonington is possibly the most quintessentially New England town on this list.
It’s a working fishing village (home to Connecticut’s last commercial fishing fleet) set on a pretty peninsula.
Wander the historic streets lined with sea captains’ homes, and visit the Stonington Harbor Light, an 1840 lighthouse that’s now a museum.
Enjoy the views from the point. It’s postcard-perfect and utterly charming.
🏝️ 8. Westport
Westport is an artsy town on the Sound that beautifully combines beaches, culture and great shopping.
Spend the day at Compo Beach, with its boardwalk and parkland, or at Sherwood Island State Park, Connecticut’s very first state park.
Then explore the boutique-lined downtown, which has a real creative energy.
It’s a stylish, lively seaside town with plenty to do.
🌳 9. Guilford
Guilford is centered on one of the largest and most beautiful town greens in New England, ringed by historic homes, shops and restaurants.
It’s home to the Henry Whitfield House, built in 1639, which is the oldest stone house in New England.
Down by the water you’ll find Jacobs Beach, and just outside town, Bishop’s Orchards is a lovely spot for farm-fresh treats.
It’s a gorgeous, history-rich coastal town.
🚢 10. New London
New London is a historic seaport city with a working waterfront and a rich maritime story.
It’s home to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and its excellent museum, plus the tall ship EAGLE when she’s in port.
For beach time, Ocean Beach Park has a lovely boardwalk and sandy shore.
You can also visit the Monte Cristo Cottage, boyhood home of playwright Eugene O’Neill.
