Known for its spectacular landscapes and beaches, Northumberland is one of the best places to visit in England and it’s so underrated!
One of the best things to do while exploring Northumberland is to visit the castles. There are so many of them and they are all amazing.
While the list could go on forever, I selected the 5 best castles to visit in Northumberland during your next holiday.
1. Bamburgh Castle
Of all the castles that can be visited in England, this is by far one of my favourites. It majestically sits on a rocky cliff and offers stunning views over Bamburgh Beach (which is itself one of the best beaches in the UK).
It was the home of the real Last Kingdom of Bebbanburg and there is so much history!
The views are amazing but you can also visit it inside and it’s incredibly beautiful and interesting.
2. Alnwick Castle
This is the ultimate castle to visit for Harry Potter fans since it was featured in the movies but it’s also one of the best experiences you can have in Northumberland.
The castle grounds are so vast and there are so many things you can do in the castle. Several activities are available such as archery, broom lessons, mediaeval soap making workshop and more.
It’s also a great location for photographers since there are so many beautiful angles.
3. Lindisfarne Castle
Located on Holy Island, Lindisfarne Castle is also a very unique castle because it offers breathtaking views of the North Sea and the island.
Holy Island is a tidal island which means it’s only accessible at low tide. This is an experience in itself but visiting the castle is also a great thing to do because there is a lot of history and it’s the best place on the island to get fantastic views.
4. Dunstanburgh Castle
Located along the rugged coastline near Craster, Dunstanburgh Castle is a dramatic ruin with stunning coastal views, especially at sunset.
It’s managed by the English Heritage and can be easily accessed on foot from Craster.
The walk is flat (which makes it easy) and it’s very scenic.
Also, you can stop in Craster and get some famous kippers!
5. Warkworth Castle
Located in the quaint town of Warkworth, the castle is set within a loop of the River Coquet which means there are a lot of scenic walks around.
It’s also managed by the English Heritage which means you can visit it for free if you are a member.
